読売新聞の（福）さん、リメイクされた『ヤッターマン』を語る

今月のテーマは新作「ヤッターマン」についてでした。

THROUGH OTAKU EYES / 'Yatterman' revives childhood days

I sometimes wonder: "For whom should TV animation be shown?" In my opinion, anime shows first and foremost should be produced for children.

However, my feelings changed as I watched the remake of Yatterman (Mondays, 7 p.m.), which started in January on the Osaka-based Yomiuri Telecasting Corp. and NTV networks.

The original Yatterman was a slapstick comedy produced by Tatsunoko Production that aired from 1977 to 1979.

The story featured a cat-and-mouse chase involving Yatterman--a pair of heroic partners in pursuit of justice--and a criminal group called Dorombo that is searching the world for a valuable treasure known as the Dokuro Stone. The word Dorombo is derived from the Japanese word "dorobo," meaning thief.

Most of the episodes ended with the defeat of the criminals--Doronjo, the voluptuous female member; Boyacky, a lean mechanic, and Tonzra, whose only attribute was brute physical force--and their punishment at the hand of their boss, Dokurobey.

As a child, I remember enjoying every episode, laughing loudly and sympathizing with the thieves, later termed "san-aku" (three bad guys) by fans, rather than with the heroes. Their never-say-die attitude probably made me understand their sorrow.

When I heard the series would be remade, I was concerned about who would be good enough to take on the roles of the thieves after the original voice actors had established the characters.

I thought ordinary actors would never be able to play the roles, but I felt relieved when I heard the parts would be performed by the original actors: Noriko Ohara (Doronjo), Joji Yanami (Boyacky) and Kazuya Tatekabe (Tonzra).

Even though it has been 30 years since the original series, the actors perfectly re-created their comical dialogues in the first episode, making me feel as if I were a kid again. But then it struck me: "How would children today like the remake?"

In the new series, the male Yatterman has become indecisive and the heroine, Ai-chan, has become cute, influenced by its modern styling. But the new series shows no other major changes, featuring a world with a similar structure.

As an adult, I want the producers to inventively create a new world that appeals to contemporary children based on the attractiveness of the original series.

On the other hand, as someone who watched the show as a child 30 years ago, I have complex feelings about the new series' opening song, which is performed by a special group, Otoya Kichiemon, featuring rock musicians Masanori Sera and Yoshio Nomura.

For the original series, singer-songwriter Masayuki Yamamoto sang its opening songs. To be honest, as someone whose bones have been penetrated by Yamamoto's voice and songs as an inseparable part of the anime, I really wanted the opening song of the new series to be performed by the original singer.

However, this former child's opinion may be just annoying for children today.

「テレビアニメは誰に見せられるべきなのだろう？」私はときどき不思議に思う。

私の意見では、アニメ番組は何よりもまず子供のために作り出されるべきだろう。

しかし、大阪を拠点とする読売テレビ放送社と、NTVネットワークで1月に始まったヤッターマン(月曜 午後7時)のリメーク作品を見たとき、私の気持ちは変化した。

オリジナルのヤッターマンは1977年から1979年まで放送したタツノコプロによって作られたドタバタ喜劇だった。物語はヤッターマン(正義を追求する一組の英雄のパートナー)と、ドクロストーンと呼ばれる貴重な宝物のために世界を捜しているドロンボーと呼ばれる犯罪グループにかかわる執拗な追跡とを特徴としていた。ドロンボーという言葉は日本語の「泥棒」を意味する単語に由来している。

エピソードは大抵、なまめかしい女性のメンバーのドロンジョ、貧弱な整備士のボヤッキー、怪力が特徴のトンズラー、そして彼らのボスであるドクロベーによるおしおき(罰)という、犯罪者の敗北で終わった。子供の私はあらゆるエピソードを、英雄と共にというよりむしろ、後にファンに"三悪"と呼ばれた泥棒に高笑いし、共感して楽しんだのを覚えている。彼らの決してあきらめない様子が、たぶん私に彼らの悲哀を理解させていたのだろう。

シリーズがリメークされると聞いたとき、私は既に役柄を確立してしまっていた悪役一味の役には誰が良いだろうかと心配していた。よほどの声優でないと決して演じることがができないと思ったが、三悪の役がオリジナルのキャスト、小原乃梨子（ドロンジョ）、八奈見乗児（ボヤッキー）、たてかべ和也（トンズラー）によって演じられると聞いて、私はほっとした。

第1話では前のオリジナルシリーズから30年が経っても、声優は彼らのコミカルな会話を完璧に再現していて、私を子供の頃に戻ったような気分にさせてくれた。しかし次に、私のなかに「子供は今日、どのようにリメーク作品が好きですか？」という疑問が浮かんだ。

新シリーズでは、ヤッターマンが優柔不断になり、アイちゃんは現在のスタイルに影響をうけて可愛くなった。

でも、新シリーズでも主だった基本的な構造については何も変わっていない。

一人の大人として、私はプロデューサーに、オリジナルのシリーズの魅力に基づいた、現代の子供の好みに合った新しい世界を創造して欲しいと思う。

一方、30年前の子供だった一人として、ロックのミュージシャンの世良公則と野村義男のユニット、音屋吉右衛門によって歌われている、新シリーズのオープニング主題歌には複雑な思いを抱いている。オリジナル・シリーズでは、シンガーソングライターの山本正之がオープニング曲を歌っていた。正直なところ、山本正之の歌声はアニメと分けられないものとして骨の髄までしみこんでおり、私は、オリジナル歌手である山本正之に新作の主題歌を歌って欲しかったと本当に思う。

──今日の子供にとっては、こんな元子供の意見はただただ煩わしいかもしれないが。
