Janet is an elegant American woman in her sixties whose daughter, Sarah, is the star of the latest Nasa shuttle mission. Janet has three children in all: Sarah, Wade, and Bryan; and a greying ex-husband, Ted. At least, that's the family at a glance; a healthy example of the all-American average. But look again and you'll find that Janet, Wade and Julie all have AIDS; that Bryan is a suicidal manic-depressive whose girlfriend is pregnant, and that Wade isn't keen to talk to his father after Ted shot him in the stomach a while back. Well, Wade had picked up Ted's mistress in a bar, after all...Needless to say, nobody's looking forward to getting together to see Sarah off into space at her special farewell banquet...

身体障害者、エイズ、宇宙、英国皇室などといったユニークなテーマを存分に用いているところにうまいと思う。でもあまりにも作られ過ぎた内容で、現実性が全くなく、家族関係もクリーシェに満ちた安易なご都合主義で描かれていて、登場人物に魅力を感じない。読んでて疲れた。これを読んで、他のCouplandの小説を読む気を失ってしまった。でも彼はユニークな作家だとこの一作品を読んでわかったし、その意味で満足。

The holidays are coming up. Or I say the hellidays. What makes it so hard is family you love them but we'll you know. So if you think your family is dysfunctional read this and you feel you are not alone. It is fiction. But Mr Douglas puts the fun in dysfunctional.

Sarkasmus, Intelligenz, und Spannung. Bringt einen auch mal zum nachdenken.
Sprachlich ohne große Schnörkel, aber mit Feingefühl, -Hat mir sehr gut gefallen.
