『シルマリルの物語』にも出ていたトゥーリン・トゥラムバールを主人公に据えてJ.R.R.トールキンの息子クリストファーが纏め上げた一冊。
紙も厚いので、それなりに分厚く見えるが、物語自体は３００ページもなく、文字も大きく余白がゆったりとってあるので見た目ほど量はない。
物語は『指輪物語』より何千年も前の時代。トゥーリンの父フーリンは、『指輪物語』でいえばサウロンに相当するようなモルゴスにつかまる。
フーリンがモルゴスに屈せず彼を蔑んだため、モルゴスはフーリンの一族を呪い、フーリンを殺さず全てが「見える」ように座らせておく。
そんな運命の下に置かれてしまったフーリンの子トゥーリンは、父が戦から帰らず近所が略奪されていく中、
身の安全のためエルフ王シンゴルの許へ送られ養育される。妹ニエノールはまだ生まれていなかった。
再三の招きにも関わらず母モルウェンとやがて誕生した妹ニエノールはシンゴルの土地へやって来ず、こうして家族は再会しない。
父は行方不明、少年時に母から引き離されて悲しみ、母と妹も来てくれずに落ち込むトゥーリンは、苦痛と呪いの双方から影につきまとわれた青年に成長。
また母に似て誇り高く、強い自尊心を持ち、周囲ともトラブルが起き、やがてシンゴルの許を去った彼の人生が始まっていく。
トールキン未完の原稿の山を息子さんが苦心惨憺まとめて編集した本書は、行く先々で災いが起こるトゥーリンの呪われた生涯を淡々と描き、
彼の複雑なパーソナリティや、彼に課せられたモルゴスの呪いをはねのける機会も何度もあったことがわかっていく。
既に他の書籍で語られている話ではあるが、トゥーリン中心にまとめ直したことで、彼の一家に特化したストーリーとして読みやすい。
冒頭にはこの時代のトールキン世界に詳しくない読者に向けた序論がある。また巻末に、この物語の成り立ちと歴史、息子さんの原稿のまとめ方が解説されている。
英文は、身分ある人々の会話などが少し古めかしく、わかりにくい表現も少々あるが、全体的には平易。
『指輪物語』も手がけているアラン・リーのカラーイラストが８枚ほど挿入されている。

まず初めに。この商品（ISBN 978-0007252251  The Children of Hurin ）は"Large Print Edition"なので、かなり大きい文字で本文が印刷されている。だいたい大文字の大きさが5ミリ四方ほど。普通の文字サイズに慣れている人は、かなり読みにくく感じると思われるので注意。

●製本の品質について
まず、紙が安っぽい。一般的なペーパーバックの紙を少し分厚くした感じの紙である。ペーパーバックなら上等だがハードバックでこんな紙を使われるとかなり残念。
カラーイラストページの紙はそれとは違いそれなりにしっかりしたものだが、せっかくのイラストページを本の真ん中にまとめてしまっているのがいただけない。物語の各場面をイラスト化したものなのに、その場面と切り離して収録するとは何を考えているのだろうか。また、各章の初めのページ（と時々最後のページ）に白黒のイラストが印刷されているが、これも印刷の目が粗いように思う。
なお、カバーは存在しない。これも安っぽさに拍車をかけている。

あえて良い点を挙げるとすれば、最後に付属している地図が開くとかなり大きくて見やすいところだろうか。
他は欠点しかないので、老眼というのでもなければあえてこのエディションを選ぶ理由はないだろう。通常のエディション（ISBN 978-0007246229  The Children of Hurin ）を買うことをお勧めする。英アマゾンのレビューを見る限りでは、イラストページはきちんと対応する場面に挿入されているようである。おまけに値段もこのエディションより安い。

Only Tolkien can create such epic worlds and weave such complex but intriguing narratives. The amount of detail and interlinked characters are mind boggling. All praise to Christopher Tolkien for such wonderful job of editing his fathers works and bringing to us this epic tale. Must read for all fantasy readers and hope to see movie adaptation in the future
