Being an aspie I love dictionaries and over the years I owned many and continued searching for a better, more comprehensive and easier to use English dictionary. I feel home when I am around the reference aisle in a book store. I owned a chambers (still the most comprehensive single volume dictionary in my opinion) and several oxfords. But the Collins English Dictionary (30th anniversary edition, June 2010) belongs to an entirely different class. Collins focuses on the words that modern users really need. Chambers fails there with its orthodox approach with an unnecessary emphasis on archaic terms and needless to say its definitions are little quirky. I find oxford dictionaries to be dry and too scholarly. Collins embraced the advances in media technology and came up with this fine dictionary. Good quality paper (not so good quality binding though), entries in blue bold font with easy explanations (see the user images I uploaded). It's an all around dictionary with many scientific and technological terms. With 1920 three column pages you are assured to find the word you need with greater probability. On the negative (?) side this is not an illustrated dictionary so no pictures or maps. I believe the lost space in the margins of American Heritage Dictionary is well compensated in Collins with more entries. The dictionary doesn't feature a real thumb index (just a colored alphabet on the edge of each page). Dictionary also doesn't have pronunciation key on every page (just on the last thick page). Also this is not an American dictionary, however I find American dictionaries and texts inferior to their British and German counterparts (No offense please, I hold a Ph.D in Organic Chemistry from a US University, so I have some experience with them). Overall I strongly recommend this dictionary to anyone who loves words or anyone who wants to expand his knowledge with pleasure reading.
