Ruth Krauss's beloved picture books include two Caldecott Honor Books, The Happy Day, illustrated by Marc Simont, and A Very Special House, illustrated by Maurice Sendak, as well as the perennial favorite A Hole is to Dig, also illustrated by Mr. Sendak.



In addition to Where the Wild Things Are, Maurice Sendak's books include Kenny's Window, Very Far Away, The Sign on Rosie's Door, Nutshell Library (consisting of Chicken Soup with Rice, Alligators All Around, One Was Johnny, and Pierre), Higglety Pigglety Pop! or There Must Be More to Life, In the Night Kitchen, Outside Over There, We Are All in the Dumps with Jack and Guy, and Bumble-Ardy.

He received the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are; the 1970 Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration; the 1983 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, given by the American Library Association in recognition of his entire body of work; and a 1996 National Medal of Arts in recognition of his contribution to the arts in America. In 2003, he received the first Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, an international prize for children's literature established by the Swedish government.

I bought this book because I remembered it from my childhood and it was just mentioned in Marie Popover BRAIN PICKIN. She uses the illustrations often and I had to have it for my great grand children!!

The book was wonderful, the illustrations were more lovely than expected.
I gave it as a gift, and I only hope the heartfelt meaning has been passed on.

I was so happy that Amazon had the book available, it's old. It was a find, a discovery. I was not disappointed.
'Ill Be You and You Be Me' is a treasure. To be treasured for years to come.

I love this book and so does my two year old girl. She seemed surprised by how much it made sense when we first read it and immediately asked for it again and again. It is little snippets and poems that I assume are rooted in eavesdropped play and conversation with children. Don't expect a story.

Like A Hole Is To Dig, another Krauss/Sendak collaboration, this book comes as close to perfection as any children's book I know. Full of wonderful almost-poems of a surreal beauty and simplicity that express simple truths and timeless values: sharing, generosity, helping others, coping with disappointments, how dreams (and children) are life-giving forces. All of this wrapped up in a non-saccharine package due to the book's simplicity. We read this book over and over and I never ever tire of it -- have bought it for many children and many adults not only to spread the pleasure but also because I believe you cannot be too old to (re)learn the truths of this text.
