Bush."Dr. Peter Drucker is the world's foremost pioneer of management theory. Dr. Drucker has championed concepts such as privatization, management by objective and decentralization. He has served as a consultant to numerous governments, public service institutions and major corporations. Dr. Drucker is a Professor of Social Sciences and Management at the Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California, which named its Graduate School of Management after him. He helped establish and continues to serve as the Honorary Chairman of the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management in New York City, which awards the Peter F. Drucker Award for Nonprofit Innovation. He is currently applying his expertise to the management of churches and other faith-based institutions and to the reorganization of universities worldwide.It was established by President Truman in 1945 to recognize civilians for their service during World War II, and it was reinstated by President Kennedy in 1963 to honor distinguished service.

Also among the honorees were Hank Aaron, Bill Cosby, Placido Domingo, Katharine Graham, Nancy Reagan, and A.M. Rosenthal.

Peter F. Drucker was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1909. Educated in Austria and in England, Mr. Drucker holds a doctorate in Public and International Law from Frankfurt University in Germany. He also has received honorary doctorates from American, Belgian, Czech, English, Japanese, Spanish and Swiss universities. Since 1971, Mr. Drucker has been Marie Rankin Clarke Professor of Social Science and Management at Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California, which named its Graduate Management Center after him in 1987.

In addition to teaching, Mr. Drucker currently acts as a consultant, specializing in strategy and policy for both businesses and nonprofits, and in the work and organization of top management. He has worked with many of the world's largest corporations and with small and entrepreneurial companies; with nonprofits such as universities, hospitals and community services; and with agencies of the U.S. Government as well as with Free-World governments such as those of Canada and Japan. In the past, Mr. Drucker has variously been economist for an international bank in London; American economist for a group of British and European banks and investment trusts; and American correspondent for a group of British newspapers.

From 1950 to 1971, Mr. Drucker was Professor of Management at the Graduate Business School of New York University which awarded him the university s highest honor, the Presidential Citation in 1969. From 1979 to 1985, he also served as Professorial Lecturer in Oriental Art at Pomona College, one of the Claremont Colleges. He also acted as Professor of Politics and Philosophy at Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont.

A prolific writer on subjects relating to society, economics, politics and management, Mr. Drucker has published 30 books which have been translated into more than twenty languages. In addition to his writings on management and economics, he has written an autobiographical book entitled, Adventures of a Bystander, and co-authored Adventures of the Brush; Japanese Paintings. Mr. Drucker has made several series of educational movies based on his management books, and he was an editorial columnist for the Wall Street Journal from 1975 to 1995, and serves as a frequent contributor to magazines.

Mr. Drucker is married and has four children and six grandchildren.

1909年、オーストリア・ウィーン生まれ。フランクフルト大学卒業後、経済記者、論説委員をつとめる。1933年ナチス・ドイツの不興を買うことを承知の論文を発表して、ロンドンへ移住。マーチャントバンクでアナリストをつとめた後、37年渡米。ニューヨーク大学教授などを経て、71年、ロサンゼルス近郊のクレアモント大学院大学教授に就任、以降この地で執筆と教育、コンサルティング活動を続けた。

ファシズムの起源を分析して、イギリスの後の宰相ウィンストン・チャーチルの絶賛をうけた処女作『「経済人」の終わり』、ＧＭのマネジメントを研究した『企業とは何か』をはじめ、40冊近い膨大な著作群は、「ドラッカー山脈」とも呼ばれる。

ドラッカー教授の専門領域は、政治、行政、経済、経営、歴史、哲学、心理、文学、美術、教育、自己実現など多方面にわたっており、さまざまな分野に多大な影響を及ぼした。

東西冷戦の終結、高齢化社会の到来、知識社会への転換といった社会の根源的な変化をいち早く示した現代社会最高の哲人であるとともに、マネジメントの体系を確立し、「分権化」「自己目標管理」「民営化」「ベンチマーキング」「コアコンピタンス」などマネジメントスキルのほとんどを生み出したマネジメントの父である。

ＧＥのジャック・ウェルチ、Ｐ＆Ｇのアラン・ラフリーなど、ドラッカー教授を師と仰ぐ世界的経営者は多い。『エクセレント・カンパニー』のトム・ピータース、『ビジョナリー・カンパニー』のジム・コリンズといった著名な著述家たちも、ドラッカー教授の薫陶を受けている。

親日家としても知られる。1934年、ロンドンの街角で雨宿りに偶然入った画廊で目にした日本画の虜となり、室町水墨画などのコレクションを有する。

2005年、あと8日で96歳の誕生日を迎えるという日に永眠。「20世紀の知的巨人」「マネジメントの父」など、ドラッカー教授を称する言葉はたくさんあるが、本人は自らを社会生態学者と規定した。

生涯を通じた最大の関心事は「社会的存在としての人間の自由と平等」であり、そのために社会、組織、企業はどうあるべきか、一人ひとりの人間は何をなすべきかを問い続けた。その思想は、モダン（近代合理主義）を超えて、21世紀を支配するポストモダンの旗手である。

訳者には申し訳ないが、この本は原書で読むべき。原書には一般の新社会人から社長まで、誰にでも分かりやすく多くの事例を紹介しながら、いつの世も悩める社会人に温かく語りかけるような空気がある。
さらに英語も難し過ぎず、ちょっと辛抱すれば必ず読み切れる。200ページ弱なので。英語の勉強にもなる。
多くの示唆に富み、モチベーションも上がり、仕事に役立ち、おまけに英語の勉強に身なる。それでこの値段。
コスパはギネス級と言えるだろう。

邦訳『経営者の条件』の原書です。

ドラッカー本人が書かれた文章は、決して学究的な難しい
論文という感じではなく、短い文章を論理的にしっかりと
繋がるように積み上げていって、結果として何が言いたい
のかが分かり易い。

そうしたことから、本書が４０年以上前に書かれた本で、
出てくる例が古いにも関わらず、その例を使って著者が
言わんとしている事は、時代に左右されないものだという
ことも分かります。

また、本書での「エグゼクティブ」の定義は、会社の役員や
取締役のような人物に限らず、「自らの立場から、組織が
成果をあげる力に対して影響を及ぼす責任がある人間」と
すれば、例え部下が一人もいない平社員だとしても、
更にバイトでさえ、自らの決断や行動が全体に対して
どのような影響を及ぼすのか、と考えながら仕事を
している人間は皆エグゼクティブといえます。

ゆえに、本書は、仕事をしている全ての人間に対して
お薦めできる本です。

ドラッカーは邦訳は駄目、原書でなければならないという
訳ではありませんが、ある程度英語が読める方は、原書の
方を辞書を使いながらでも読んでみることをお薦めします。

イケて無い上司に悩むことしばらく、精神的にとってもつらかったときに、特に期待してもいなかった「もし、ドラ...」を今更ながらに手に取り、一番レビューが多くて人気なようだったこの本を手に取りました。とても５０年近く前に書かれたと思えない、とってもしっくり来る本でした。いわれのない上司の嫌がらせに悩んでくらしくて眠れない夜も、勇気づけてくれる、とっても道理にかなった本で、想像以上になぐさめられました。

「Knowledge worker」と「Manual laborer」の違いによって、両者は同じようにmanageはできない、というのも上司は「Manual laborer」だと思ってみんなに接しているんだ、と目からウロコな発見で、だから噛み合ないんだと、妙に納得させてくれました。だからこそ、真の「Knowledge worker」の地位を手に入れるベく、この本に紹介されている習慣を身につけていこう、と思わせてくれ、私の未来を１日２日で本当に劇的に明るくしてくれた本です。

どういう風に仕事を出していくことが社会的な「Knowledge worker」の存在価値なのか、ということを指し示してくれる素敵なガイドです。ここに書かれている真の「Effective executive」と一緒に仕事をすれば楽しいので、自分もそんな人間になれるようがんばろう、と思えました。

笑顔を取り戻してくれた恩人のような本となったので、英文はあまり得意でない友人にも薦めようとしたところ、日本語タイトルが「経営者の条件」という、なんだかピンとこないものだったのにはちょっとびっくりしました。そのタイトルじゃ、この本の良さは伝わらないと思うのでもったいないと思います。「結果を出す仕事の進め方」とか「効果的な組織幹部になるには」とかのほうがしっくりくるかな。「Executive」って日本語にはぴったりくるものが意外に無いものですね...。レビューで丁寧に紹介されているみなさま、「社会人になりたての人にこそおすすめ」と書いている方達に大感謝です。

これからも何回も読みかえすことになる本だと思います！

サラリーマンになってもうすぐ四半世紀になりそれなりの数の部下を持つようになったこともあり、ドラッカーを一度読んでみようと思い、数多くの著作の中でも評価の高い本書を手に取ってみた。原書を購入して一通り読んで、これはすばらしい本だと気付いて、今度は原書と和訳（上田淳生氏訳）を両方手に持って、原書でわかりにくい部分を和訳と照らし合わせながら読んでみた。

本書が出版されたのは1966年と40年も前だが、説かれている内容は普遍的で一部の事例を除けば古びたところはまるでない。
本書においてドラッカーは組織の中で決断を下す必要があるすべての人をExecutive（会社役員に限定されないことに注意）と位置づけて、現代の組織（会社、病院、政府などすべてを含む）がEffective（成果を上げることができる）であるためには、組織を構成するExecutiveがEffectiveである必要があり、そのためには時間を確保して何が正しいかを常に自問し、そして必要な場合においては決断をくだして実行に移さねばならないと説いている。

本書のすごいところは、それを実行するための思考方法・手順を具体的に示しているところだ。成果を上げることができるExecutiveが実践している8つの行為を提示して、実践方法を詳述している。書かれている内容には自分がサラリーマンとして自分の経験で重要と体得していることも含まれていたが、無意識に行っている部分もあり、本書の体系的な説明を読んでより深く理解することができた。

本書はどのように成果を上げていこうか、組織をどのように動かそうかと前向きに悩んでいる管理職であれば、読んで損は決してないと思う。但しこれを自分のものにするためには何度も読み返す必要があり、今後も機会を見つけて読み返していこうと思っている。

なお、英語版と邦訳を比較してみると、やはり可能な人は原書で読む方がいいと思う。ドラッカー氏の言葉は簡潔でわかりやすいが、実に格調高く、これを読んでいるだけで身が引き締まる思いがしてくる。和訳も訳の内容自体には問題はないと思うが、翻訳物ならではのぎこちなさにより、原書の格調高さは少なからず損なわれている気がした。

Peter Druckerの著作から二冊選べと言われたら、そのうちの一冊はこの本にしたいと思います。なお、もう一冊は The Age of Discontinuity です。

Druckerは企業の役員以上の人が読む本だとずっと思っていました。でも、少なくとも、この本は違います。Executiveであろうと社会人一年生であろうと、また自営であろうと企業に所属していようと、仕事をする人すべてに得るものがあります。

この本は一生役に立つ知識が得られます。ですので、若いうちにこそ読むべき本だと思います。いくつになっても遅くはありませんが、読んだ人はかならず、もっと早く読んでいれば良かったと思うはずです。お勧めです。

The book's strength is the systemacity, depth and rigor of its thought. The legendary author approaches Management as a science, shunning mysticism and romance, and by doing so, constructs a discipline of principles that can be learnt and applied for effective performance in any extended endeavor.
