Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably one of the most influential writers of his day. He was a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Oxford University until 1954, when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. He wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience, and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year. His most distinguished and popular accomplishments include Out of the Silent Planet, The Great Divorce, The Screwtape Letters, and the universally acknowledged classics The Chronicles of Narnia. To date, the Narnia books have sold over 100 million copies and have been transformed into three major motion pictures.

私はクリスチャンになって、7年経った今読みましたが、この本のおかげで、心が整理されたように思います。神様についても、自分の中で過去から来る傷などから誤解していた部分も、正してもらえました。こんな風にキリスト教を、客観的かつ、主観的に説明できる人は、国籍、年代を問わず、なかなかいないと思います。私の人生の中で一番大切な本です。日本語版は、チラッとみたところ、訳の関係からか、とても難しい感じがしました。英語盤の方が、文章がわかりやすいです。

ルイスによるキリスト教のプレゼ㊊??テーション。この書において彼は素晴らしい仕事をし㊊??。ルイスはまず客観的道徳の存在より議論を進める。㊊??まり、あらゆる文化、時代に関係なく人間の道徳性に㊊??ある一定の共通点が見られる。それは一体何に発する㊊??のなのか。世界に意味はない、と主張する無神論はこ㊊??問いにより破綻する。そこで、人間を超越した、形而䊊??的、超自然的な存在がいることを説明した後、ルイス㊊??キリストの議論に移る。彼によると、我々に提示され㊊??イエス・キリストの正体に関する選択肢は三つしかな㊊??。つまり、神の子、狂人、詐欺師のいずれかである。㊊??して、人類の次のステージへの進化はもう始まってい㊊??という。イエスを救世主として受け入れることにより㊊??我々も人の子から神の子となり、神と共に永遠を享受㊊??ることができる。

情けない脱字脱落多し

先ず、届いたものは表紙の違う別版で、「なか見」画面のものが届いたのは、意外だったがそこは由としよう。届いたCollins版は表紙も本文も紙の質が厚く、そのため表紙に折り目を付けようとするとノドのところが割れそうで非常に往生した（定規を当てて背から8~10mmくらいの処で押えて表も裏も表紙に折り目を付けた）。しかし、本文の紙も厚いため、殆ど両端以外は章ごとに折り目を入れるというようなことは断念せざるを得なかった。ペーパーバックなのだから、読みさしに伏せておくようなことも想定して紙質を選定したり、糸かがりにしてページが脱落したり背中が割れたりしないように工夫があって当然だろう。
　かてて加えて、この版も前身のHarperSanfFrancisco版も同様に脱字や誤植が散見され実に不愉快だ。読む気が失せて未だ途中で止まったままだが、例えば、Amazon紹介ページの画像とは違っている、配達されたこのCollins社C.S.Lewis Signarture Classic Editionで云うと、
　p.14、19行目：行途中で「put-ting」と不要なハイフン
　p.19､ 16行目：行途中で「individ-uals」と不要なハイフン
　p.30、 26行目：「make and exception」でandではなくanとすべき誤植
　p.31、 21行目：「face the sort of facts」で前の行がyou have なので「faced」とすべき誤植
　p.89、 1行目：「contradiction to the other great psychologist, Jung.」のtoの後に致命的脱落「Christianity:and also in direct contradiction to」あり
　p.96、 13行目：「Now suppose you come to a country」は動詞が元来は cameであるのが見落とされている
等枚挙に暇がない。英語圏でも校正力の低下が進行しているのかも知れないが、読者置き去りの好い加減な版が横行することは許せない。出版社は英を質すべきだろう。早急にこのCollins版は廃盤にすべきである。

I have been reading this book since December and to be honest I took it slow on purpose. I kept coming back to this book inspite my day to day challenges because it just felt so timely. This classic book by C.S. Lewis was originally part of a series of BBC broadcasts given by him during the second world war. His radio broadcasts brought healing & hope to the lives of many back then. Now as a book, Mere Christianity combines all his lectures into a 230-pages quintessential introduction of christian faith to the world. As an atheist-turned-christian, C.S. Lewis makes theology so very interesting. He answers the most common yet significant faith questions making it plain & simple to understand for a layman.

“A world of nice people, content in their own niceness, looking no further, turned away from God, would be just as desperately in need of salvation as a miserable world— and might even be more difficult to save. For mere improvement is not redemption…God became man to turn creatures into sons: not simply to produce better men of the old kind but to produce a new kind of man”
