レビュー

If you want to know who really invented the Internet, or how brain waves can control robotic limbs, or how smart cars will become brilliant, this is your book. A must-read for those interested in invention in the modern age (Joe Pappalardo, Popular Mechanics)

“A fascinating introduction to a veritable pantheon of geek gods who quietly shaped the face of modern technology.” (Daniel H. Wilson, roboticist and author of How to Survive a Robot Uprising)

“An entertaining and information rich account of a small, efficient government agency that often turned 20th century sci-fi into 21st century technical reality. Belfiore will inspire young readers of a scientific bent to flood DARPA with their resumes.” (Robert Wallace, author of SPYCRAFT: The Secret History of the CIA's Spytechs from Communism to al-Qaeda)

“An inspiring book about a crucial government agency (DARPA) with a driving spirit to do the impossible and to do it fast. We all need to read this book.” (John Seely Brown, Former Chief Scientist of Xerox and Director of its Palo Alto ResearchCenter (PARC) John Seely Brown, Former Chief Scientist of Xerox and Director of its Palo Alto ResearchCenter (PARC))

[DARPA’s] history has never been told at the level of detail and with such mastery as in this book by Michael Belfiore (Leonard Kleinrock, Distinguished Professor of Computer Science, UCLA, and Internet pioneer)

“An expansive look at one of the most important agencies not only in the Department of Defense, but in American history.” (Nathan Hughes, Military Analyst, STRATFOR)

PRAISE FOR ROCKETEERS:“Belfiore excels at painting the world of NewSpace.” (New Scientist)

“A riveting, you-are-there account of how this ragtag collection of innovative thinkers, brave pilots, and bold visionaries is--right now--launching one of the most exciting new industries in history. Belfiore’s eloquent writing and exhaustive reporting really bring this mysterious, secretive world to life.” (Popular Science)

“That this story is still unfolding makes it especially exciting to read. These men are still in their workshops, tinkering their way into orbit.” (Forbes)

“The commerical space race is heating up so fast you need a cheat sheet to keep track of all the billionaires and gamblers vying to be the first private entrepreneur to blast paying customers into orbit. [Belfiore] does a stellar job introducing an intriguing cast of characters.” (Wired)

“The privitization of space travel is an essential step toward realizing our cosmic destiny. In his engaging, highly readable ROCKETEERS, Michael Belfiore tells the fascinating story of the entrepreneurs who have already made it happen.” (Buzz Aldrin)

I was expecting more of the work DARPA has accomplished and is currently working on. However, the content was mostly all about the scientists who worked on the project. The title The Department of Mad Scientists had attracted me a lot, and since I was fond of DARPA's accomplishments. NOT a read if you want to read about the exciting future scenarios.

The Department of Mad Scientists was a very enjoyable and easy 257-page read. Having admired DARPA from a distance over the years, Michael Belfiore's book gave context and meaningful history to what is an unusual federal government agency. There is a lot of take-away from this book for those who are interested in the development of advanced technologies.

Each chapter of Michael's well-written book provided insight on how DARPA has seeded many new innovations that impact modernity. I recommend the book be added to anyone considering themselves a 'technocrat' and for those seeking to have insight to DARPA operations and program managers. I learned some unique take-aways from the Belfiore book. Most readers would not regret having this unique work their library. It provides a realistic glimpse into the future of much needed and wide-ranging technologies that will impact American society in the years ahead.

The last chapter, "Power to the People" provides a unique set-up to do a new book on ARPA-E as it matures and advances new energy technologies for Americans. Let us hope that ARPA-E is equally successful over the next fifty years as DARPA has been from what is publicly known about the entity.Michael Belfiore is positioned well to do a compartive analysis of DARPA and ARPA-E in the time ahead.

Das Buch hat einige interessante Seiten, der Autor kommt aber leider nicht auf den Punkt.

This is a brilliant insight into the world of DARPA. However, for obvious reasons, the author wasn't able to go into very much detail on many of the projects. Recommended for anyone interested in the history of some of the worlds greatest technologies and a little peek into the future...

I have been a principle investigator or program manager on the contractors side of 9 DARPA research contracts and so I know a fair amount about the agency and therefor was interested in this book. I was not disappointed. I learned a lot that I did not know, particularly the early history of the agency. Before I read the book, I had know idea who Neil McElroy was and now he is my hero. The anomaly that is DARPA, an amazingly efficient organization surrounded by a sea of inefficient bureaucracies, can be understood as the legacy of people who don't believe much of anything is impossible and just want to get things done. While Belfiore takes a scatter gun approach to covering the wide array of technologies that have been and are being worked on at DARPA, he manages to capture the crazed dedication of the program managers, the political whimsy that they and the agency must deal with and the amazing impact this relatively small group of people have had and most likely will continue to have on our security, society, science, technology, and culture.

Michael Belfiore brings an open, inquiring mind to his subjects, and he respects his readers. This is an excellent combination, especially for such a chaotic, weird and exciting world as DARPA and its various contractors. I read the book in one great gulp, then went back and reread sections. The personalities and how they each deal with the technical challenges they face makes for very compelling reading. Much more interesting that most science fiction, since these guys and gals are doing what was science fiction a short time ago.
Highly recommended.
