I hope, for your sake, that you have not chosen to read this book because you are in the mood for a pleasant experience. If this is the case, I advise you to put this book down instantaneously, because of all the books describing the unhappy lives of the Baudelaire orphans, The Miserable Mill might be the unhappiest yet. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are sent to Paltryville to work in a lumber mill, and they find disaster and misfortune lurking behind every log. The pages of this book, I'm sorry to inform you, contain such unpleasantries as a giant pincher machine, a bad casserole, a man with a cloud of smoke where his head should be, a hypnotist, a terrible accident resulting in injury, and coupons. I have promised to write down the entire history of these three poor children, but you haven't, so if you prefer stories that are more heartwarming, please feel free to make another selection.

Lemony Snicket had an unusual education which may or may not explain his ability to evade capture. He is the author of the 13 volumes in A Series of Unfortunate Events, several picture books including The Dark, and the books collectively titled All The Wrong Questions.



Brett Helquist's celebrated art has graced books from the charming Bedtime for Bear, which he also wrote, to the New York Times–bestselling A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket to the glorious picture book adaptation of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. He lives with his family in Brooklyn, New York.



Michael Kupperman has done many illustrations for such publications as Fortune, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. He frequently writes scripts for DC Comics. This is his first book.

Once again the Baudelaire orphans are transplanted in what will turn out to be a "Series of Unfortunate Events." Their newest home is the Lucky Smells Lumbermill dormitory.

Here once again Lemony tells the meaning of many words (usually with words that need the meaning explained.) We are treated to the difference of literally and figurative among other such concepts.

Naturally they think everyone is Olaf. And of course they are correct. A mystery has to be solved and to do this Violet must learn Klaus's skills of reading apprehension. Then there are lives to be saved and Klaus must learn Violets' inventive skills. Sunny stays En garde.

今回３人のきょうだいは、パルトリーヴィル（直訳すれば「つまらない場所」）にあるラッキー・スメルズ製材所（幸せのにおいのする製材所）という、誠に嘘っぽい場所に引き取られる。案の定、着いたその日から、辛く危険な製材所の仕事をさせられ、他の作業員とともに、大部屋に寝泊まりさせられる。
彼らを引き取った製材所のオーナーは、名前もわからない（難しくて誰も発音できないらしい）人物で、いつもまわりにタバコの煙がもくもくと漂っているため、顔もわからない。
スニケットの筆は、だんだん油がのってきて、まさかこんな！といったようなばかばかしい出来事が、大真面目に語られる。それにしても、ひと目で明らかにオラフ伯爵だとわかる人物を、大人はなぜ見分けられないのだろう？つまり、大人は形式にとらわれるあまりに、物事の本質を見ていないということか・・・。
この物語に、そこまでの教訓が含まれているとは思えないが、きょうだいの周りにいる大人たちのばかさ加減といったら、もう笑うしかない。そして、またしてもきょうだいが力を合わせ、難局を乗り切っていく。不幸ばかりが続く中での彼らのがんばりが、いつも希望に満ちているのが救いである。

A l'image du reste de la collection, le livre est de bonne facture avec une couverture de qualité et des illustrations très agréable.

Ce tome s'inscrit dans le renouvellement tragi-comique de la série :
- Les orphelins arrivent dans une scierie totalement déjantée dirigée par un mystérieux patron. Mais où est donc le comte Olaf ? (Non, ce n'est le patron!)

Bien écrit, dans un anglais facile sans être simpliste, c'est toujours un plaisir de lire ces ouvrages en langue originelle.

Getting these as a collection for my daughter so she can have them when she gets older...been reading these to her since she before she could speak. Love the design/illustrations...I feel bad for these kids but this is a great series.
