著者について

Charlotte Zolotow—author, editor, publisher, and educator—has one of the most distinguished reputations in the field of children's literature. She has written more than seventy books, many of which are picture-book classics, such as Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present and William's Doll. She lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.



Arnold Lobel (1933–1987) illustrated many wonderful children’s books but is most beloved for his Frog and Toad stories, including the first one, Frog and Toad Are Friends, published in 1970. The books have garnered much acclaim, including a Caldecott Honor for Frog and Toad Are Friends and a Newbery Honor for Frog and Toad Together. These were followed by Frog and Toad All Year and Days with Frog and Toad.

This book was originally published in 1963, and one of the children calls the other children a term that would not have been concerning in 1963, but now would be considered a gay slur. So just FYI on that. Otherwise, this is an amazing story about how a bad attitude can spread and affect so many people, but also how a good attitude can do the same. Really worthwhile message.

I have found The Quarreling Book to be a most effective story for 2nd and 3rd graders. To me, this book is not so much about quarreling, but more about emotions and feelings. This book is delightfully written by well-known children's author, Charlotte Zolotow with illustrations by Arnold Lobel. It really holds children's attention and helps them understand how we all "pass on" our feelings, for good or ill, to the people around us. In the classroom, I follow up with a discussion of specific strategies for emotionally healthy ways to deal with bad feelings. I would highly recommend this book to teachers and parents alike.
