最初に「初級からでも充分読める」と書いてある通り、習い始めの頃から、ページが進むごとに段階的に内容と語彙が増えて行きます。

私が興味があったのはパート2の部分の、メキシコの歴史です。勿論簡単な文章で書いてありますが、充分な知識を得ることができました。

全体として読みやすく、又新語の脚注もあり、初中級くらいの方なら、特に辞書を引かなくても読めると思います。また巻末に単語のグローサリーもあり、分からなければこれで意味を引くこともできます。

各章毎に練習問題もあり、私はこれはしませんでしたが、すれば作文の練習にもなると思います。

初中級くらいまでのリーダーで、これが読めたら次はハリーポッターのようなものに進んだら良いと思います。

Great resource for beginner. It progresses slowly and contains useful vocab hints and Q&A to reinforce contact.
However, as I've found it, reading is only one piece of the puzzle. Exercises, listening and talking can actually be more important.

I have been learning Spanish at evening classes for some 2 years. I have a number of course books, a verb work-book and a dictionary. I bought this book based on my teachers recommendation to provide another approach alongside the course work. It has done exactly that. It is progressive and takes you through the easier texts to the more advanced ones and brings in the use of the present, past and future tenses in a well-constructed manner. The texts are not too long and are broken up with questions at the end to reinforce you understanding. The final section of the book is an abridged version of a classic Spanish story.

The main feature of the book is that new words and phrases are translated in the margin of the text which saves having to refer to the vocabulary at the end of the book. In addition there are model answers to questions posed as you make your way from chapter to chapter.

I liked the book and the approach so much that I purchased another copy for my daughter who lives in Spain and is also learning the language. Heartily recommended.

Enrique and Maria are seniors at Glenview High School, learning Spanish and enjoying the activities of their Spanish club, los Aventureros. They have an enjoyable senior year, playing sports, going to movies, and even exchanging "e-mails" with students from Spain. As we say goodbye to Enrique and Maria their friendship is ripening into--well, maybe, something more. So, what will finally happen? You will just have to read the book to find out--in Spanish.

Two subsequent sections of the book comprise a brief history of Mexico--in full blood and gore--from the Aztecs to Vicente Fox; and a shortened adaptation of a classic 16th century Spanish work, Lazarillo do Tormes.

Easy Spanish Reader is based on the concept that you learn quickest by simply reading. The lessons are progressive so that you learn quickly, incorporating new words based on context. There are no tedious grammar lessons or vocabulary lists. No verb conjugations. Everything explains itself, except for a small number of marginal glosses for new vocabulary words. As other reviewers have noted, a certain rudimentary knowledge of Spanish is essential to use this book, but it can be minimal. The concept works, partly because English and Spanish share so many words and concepts. Exercizes after each lesson help to consolidate what has been learned.

The only flaw I could find is that the glossary at the back is incomplete. There are a few words you will just have to guess at. I enjoyed this book thoroughly, and I feel it has greatly enhanced my knowledge of Spanish. I recommend it highly. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.
