Andrew S. Tanenbaum has an S.B. degree from M.I.T. and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He is currently a Professor of Computer Science at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where he is head of the Computer Systems Department. He is also the Dean of the Advanced School for Computing and Imaging, an interuniversity graduate school doing research on advanced parallel, distributed, and imaging systems. Nevertheless, he is trying very hard to avoid turning into a bureaucrat.

In the past, he has done research on compilers, operating systems, networking, and local-area distributed systems. His current research focuses primarily on the design of wide-area distributed systems that scale to a billion users. This research is being done together with Dr. Maarten van Steen. Together, all his research projects have led to over 90 refereed papers in journals and conference proceedings and five books.

Prof. Tanenbaum has also produced a considerable volume of software. He was the principal architect of the Amsterdam Compiler Kit, a widely-used toolkit for writing portable compilers, as well as of MINIX, a small UNIX clone intended for use in student programming labs. Together with his Ph.D. students and programmers, he helped design the Amoeba distributed operating system, a high-performance microkernel-based distributed operating system. The MINIX and Amoeba systems are now available for free via the Internet.

His Ph.D. students have gone on to greater glory after getting their degrees. He is very proud of them. In this respect he resembles a mother hen.

Prof. Tanenbaum is a Fellow of the ACM, a Fellow of the IEEE, a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, winner of the 1994 ACM Karl V Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award, and winner of the 1997 ACM/SIGCSE Award for Outstanding Contributions to Computer Science Education. Andrew S. Tanenbaum is certainly qualified to write a book on Operating Systems, as he wrote one of (if not the) first open source operating system, called Minix. It is not widely known that Minix was actually the inspiration for Linus Torvalds to write Linux. Despite having a different philosophy in the best design of OSes, Prof. Tanenbaum is quite fair and objective in comparing other designs. For example, Prof. Tanenbaum clearly prefers the Microkernel design to the Monolithic kernel, but he covers the pros and cons of each.

This book was required for my University course "Computer Operating Systems," but I found it to be a very interesting read. I think I learned more practical knowledge from this book than from any other course I took for my Computer Science degree, except for maybe Programming Concepts. I highly recommend this book, although to be honest the price is a little high. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you do buy this, but if I hadn't have been forced I probably would have looked for something around $30 instead.

Un testo onnicomprensivo sugli OS è un po' di vecchia concezione. Resta ottimo comunque l'approccio sintetico - non tergiversa mai - ben disposto nel materiale e con esercizi di calcolo, è pur sempre testo tecnico! Pecca per l'assenza di codice, ma questa è una scelta redazionale presumo, e lo scheduling viene trattato forse un po' superficialmente ponendo enfasi sugli algoritmi, ad esempio, per segnalare un topic ove altri testi meglio si dilungano. Resta un must, non c'è dubbio ma da affiancare ad altro materiale. Un ultimo suggerimento: non comprate mai le traduzioni italiane di questi libri: perdono in freschezza ed efficacia se non addirittura contengono grossolanità.

Ich habe das Buch für die Uni an der Vorlesung "Betriebssysteme" benötigt.
Viele meiner Kollegen haben sich für die deutsche Übersetzung entschieden, die jedoch vor Fehlern nur so strotzt und auch auf einer älteren Ausgabe des Buches basiert.
Auch wenn die Sprache des Autors teilweise sehr gehoben und manchmal ausschweifend wirkt, so ist es doch angenehm zu lesen und es werden wirkliche Basics vermittelt.
Auch Dinge die vermeintlich schon lange nicht mehr gültig sind werden vermittelt, kommen aber immer wieder hoch.
Es ist sehr strukturiert aufgebaut und strukturiert und man kann getrost Teile überspringen wenn man schon Vorkenntnisse hat, da hier wirklich von der Pike an vermittelt wird.

Abgerundet wird das gesamte Werk noch mit Fallstudien über Linux, Symbian (leider wohl nicht mehr lange aktuell) und Windows Vista (ist aber bei neueren Windows Versionen nicht viel anders), womit man auch einen tiefen Einblick in die Systeme bekommt.

Alles in allem eine klare Empfehlung für an dem Thema Interessierte und Studenten die mit anderer Literatur Probleme haben.

This is the best book on operating systems (together with his companion: Operating Systems Design and Implementation). That didn't come at a surprise as it was written by the guy who wrote Minix (today Minix3, the subject of the companion book mentioned above). Mr. Tanenbaum is simply the best in the field; he wrote also excellent books on Networks and Data Structures. I'm completing a MSc in Computer Science and the choice there was for Stallings' book. I also bought this one just to have a second opinion, and likely so. I soon left Stallings' one for Tanenbaum's. The man is extraordinary gifted in telling you how OS work from the ground-up and in explaining difficult concepts with a clearness of exposition and a precision of explanation that it's fun reading his books. Everything you want to know about OS from a theoretical point of view is in this book. If you want also to see the practical side, its companion explains how Minix3 (the father of Linux just to name one OS) has been architected and written showing the code and actual implementation.

Mr. Tanenbaum can rightly enter history as one of the most influential computer scientists of our era, as his numerous prizes and awards show.
