Studies of the fates of past societies may help us understand what could happen to societies living in the same area today.
(one might use knowledge of the past to avoid repeating the same mistake)
Average blood lead levels in Chinese city-dwellers are nearly double the levels considered elsewhere in the world to be dangerously high
and to put at risk the mental development of children.

Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Survive
Jared Diamond
(著)
From groundbreaking writer and thinker Jared Diamond comes an epic, visionary new book on the mysterious collapse of past civilizations - and what this means for our future. Why do some societies flourish, while others founder? What happened to the people who made the forlorn long-abandoned statues of Easter Island or to the architects of the crumbling Maya pyramids? Will we go the same way, our skyscrapers one day standing derelict and overgrown like the temples at Angkor Wat? Bringing together new evidence from a startling range of sources and piecing together the myriad influences, from climate to culture, that make societies self-destruct, Collapse also shows how unlike our ancestors we can benefit from our knowledge of the past and learn to be survivors.

This work is nonfiction, written in an informal style, which investigates civilizations from the Maya era to present day. It seeks to detect solutions for sustaining existent cultures. It is interesting because until now there has never been an analysis of history by scientific research methods. However, it is doubtful that the work will discover resolutions because there are a lot of environmental differences between the collapsed cultures he investigates and the recent ones.
The author, Jared Diamond, is basically an ornithologist working around the New Guinea area that that has also been a director of an environmental organization and has furthermore conducted many experiments involving big business environmental resources companies. He employs the comparative method or the ‘natural experiment’ to examine societies which have either collapsed or survived from twelve cultures in different eras, geologic environments, backgrounds, etc.
Diamond suggests a five-pointed frameworks, which are environmental damage climate change, hostile neighbors, and friendly trade partner, for explaining why societies collapse. Of course, it is not only a reason to collapse an era but also multiple causes are connected to lead the end of a culture. In the book, on of his explain the sites of societal collapses considered is Easter island. Easter island is famous about more than three hundreds stone statues, Moai, which is mostly 15 to 20 feet tall and weighting from 10 up to 270 tons, to display for ostentation their leader’s power. Prehistoric Polynesians transported and raised these huge statuses from quarry to use trees without machine. Even though having a highly skilled, they kept cutting trees till they shortage to live.
Diamond concludes the book on an optimistic note, stating that it is possible to avoid collapses that people may encounter in the future, from analyzing past occurrences. However, humans have a tendency to ignore the facts about crisis which will eventually lead to extinction. So whether the world face on serious problems, for example air pollution at Shanghai, people should stop progressing their civilization to modify an orbit to extinction.

Fascinating stories filled with reliable grounds of evidence. All the cases are as lesson learned of the past empires/civilized regions on why they were collapsed or fell into the trap of their own success. As the old saying in the law of nature says: nothing lasts forever and everything always changes .. rise and fall .. collapse and build up .. the two sides of the same coin .. and if you would not like to fall into the trap of your own success or if you would like to prolong your stands as much as you can .. this book is for you (from a perspective of region)

Starting few chapters were good, middle chapters were quite boring, in the sense of relating stories so old. Really, enjoyed chapters from modern societies. A must read for all.

Relire le roman "Make Room! Make Room!"
