Leonard Cohen was born in Montreal in 1934 and published his first poetry collection in 1956. Since then he has published a number of books, including the poetry collection LET US COMPARE MYTHOLOGIES and the novel THE FAVOURITE GAME. Renowned as a singer and performer, Leonard has recorded a number of albums, the most famous being I'M YOUR MAN and THE FUTURE. He lives in Los Angeles.

Passionate, naked, ecstatic, and devastatingly, humbly honest, Leonard Cohen engages the desolation, the hunger, the madness and the sacred mysteries without filters or boundaries. An acute intelligence, a human sacrifice, minutely attentive, devoutly present. Beautiful Losers left me breathless with its astounding use of language, poetry, imagery and storytelling. Enter this temple with your feet unshod, and abandon yourself to being flayed alive. And to helplessly laughing your ass off.

Considéré comme l'un des premiers romans postmodernes de la littérature Canadienne, Beautiful Losers n'a pas connu un franc succès lors de sa publication en 1966. C'était avant que Leonard Cohen n'ait commencé sa carrière de chanteur-compositeur, et on peut en déduire que si le roman a été par la suite encensé par la critique, c'est qu'il a bénéficié de la notoriété de son auteur, non en tant qu'écrivain, mais en tant que song writer.
Sa lecture, difficile d'accès, semble tester la patience du lecteur, et l'auteur le reconnait lui-même quand il écrit ainsi à un de ses admirateurs ;
« This is a difficult book, even in English, if it is taken too seriously. May I suggest that you skip over the parts you don't like? Dip into it here and there. Perhaps there will be a passage, or even a page, that resonates with your curiosity. After a while, if you are sufficiently bored or unemployed, you may want to read it from cover to cover. In any case, I thank you for your interest in this odd collection of jazz riffs, pop-art jokes, religious kitsch and muffled prayer æ an interest which indicates, to my thinking, a rather reckless, though very touching, generosity on your part. Beautiful Losers was written outside, on a table set among the rocks, weeds and daisies, behind my house on Hydra, an island in the Aegean Sea. I lived there many years ago. It was a blazing hot summer. I never covered my head. What you have in your hands is more of a sunstroke than a book. »
Ce qu'il ne dit pas dans sa lettre, c'est que ce n'était pas un livre écrit sous l'effet d'un coup de soleil, mais des amphétamines qu'il prenait en grosses quantités'
L'histoire tourne autour d'un triangle amoureux, le narrateur, Edith, sa femme, et F. qui couche avec les deux. Avec à l'arrière-plan la figure emblématique de Sainte Catherine Tekakwitha, une jeune indienne Mohawk morte de pénitence au Québec vers 1680 et canonisée par l'Église. Le lecteur n'y verrait à première vue qu'un délire, rempli de mort et de solitude, où la poésie se mêle à la pornographie. Mais à regarder de près, on verrait qu'au-delà de l'obscène et de la provocation, le déni de soi et l'auto-flagellation ne seraient qu'un moyen, sinon pour accéder à la sainteté, du moins pour sortir des limites de sa triste condition humaine. Cette ambivalence entre le profane et le sacré, on le retrouve dans l'œuvre musicale de Cohen (Suzanne), mais aussi appliquée à sa vie privée lorsque qu'il se retirera dans un monastère zen en Californie. Sous cet éclairage, on comprend mieux le sens du titre, Beautiful Losers. Ces losers sont magnifiques parce qu'ils veulent être perdus pour le monde profane afin de gagner celui du sacré.

bought this on kindle to preserve my 1st edition, which was appropriately, stolen from a public library for me. everyone should own, or at least read this book in their lifetime. i have read few books where the prose is quite so evocative and free of self censorship, where not a thought is left unsaid, and is as beautifully written as to elicit such deep emotion on almost every page, to the point where it is almost painful. one doesn't like to presume that the effort it must have taken to write it, ensured that this would be cohen's last novel, but perhaps it was felt that there was no need/point in any further. it remains, as do all other aspects of leonard cohen's career, painstakingly detailed, considered and essential to the whole picture. and for the pittance asked, does it deserve not to be purchased.
