Credited with inventing the modern horror tradition, H.P. Lovecraft remade the genre in the early twentieth century. Discarding ghosts and witches, and instead envisaging mankind at the mercy of a chaotic and malevolent universe, Lovecraft's unique works would prove to be a huge influence on modern horror writers such as Stephen King. This selection of short stories ranges from early tales of nightmares and insanity such as 'The Outsider' and 'The Rats in the Walls' through the grotesquely comic 'Herbert West - Reanimator' and 'The Hound', to the extraterrestrial terror of 'The Call of Cthulhu', which fuses traditional supernaturalism with science fiction. Including the definitive corrected texts, this collection reveals the development of Lovecraft's mesmerising narrative style and establishes him as a hugely influential - and visionary - American writer.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937), born in Providence, Rhode Island was self-educated and lived in his birthplace all his life, working as a freelance writer, journalist, and ghostwriter. Using many pen names, he contributed his supernatural/horror and science fiction/fantasy stories to various pulp magazines but his reputation as a writer rests mainly on the 60 or so stories he published in the pulp magazine Weird Tales starting in 1923.

H.P. Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1890. He was self-educated and lived in his birthplace all his life, working as a freelance writer, journalist, and ghostwriter. His best work - including some sixty or so short stories - was published from 1923 onwards in the pulp magazine Weird Tales. He died in 1937, in poverty and virtually unknown; today he is recognized as one of the great masters of supernatural fiction.

二段構成のレビューです。ＣＤ版も買ってみたのですが、
アマゾンさんの登録間違いか、バグによるものと思われてレビューできなかったので、
ペーパーバック版 → オーディオブック版（ＣＤ）の順に編集しなおししました。

二冊目を購入しました。
保存用にして、一冊目をさらに読みまくりたいと思います。
それほど好きな本です。

ラヴクラフトの主要なフィクション、
"Dagon", "The Call of Cthulhu", "The Colour Out of Space",
"The Whisperer in Darkness" や "The Shadow Over Innsmouth"
などの原書をお求めの方は、この一冊で間違いありません。
特に、"The Call of Cthulhu" と "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" の
二作品が一冊の中に入っているのが、とても嬉しい。
ペーパーバックなので、多少読むのに注意が必要ですが
（大きくページを開いてはいけない、等）、
日常的に読むにはぴったりの冊数が収まったペーパーバックです。
たいへん、たいへんお買い得です。

William Roberts さんという、俳優・ナレーターによる朗読ＣＤ（英語）です。
落ち着いた雰囲気（やや低め）の素敵な声色の朗読がたのしめます。
収録ストーリーは、
"The Call of Cthulhu", "The Hound", "The Dunwich Horror" と "Dagon" です。
この『クトゥルフの呼び声』と『ダゴン』がセットになっているところが良いですね。

Now move all the dial switches on the machines over to the extreme right ----- first the lens one, then the disc one, and then the tube one. That's right. I might as well tell you that this is a human being ----- just like any of us. I'll give you a taste of some of the others tomorrow.”

これは、この短編集に収録された作品から引用したものである。まるでRay Bradbury、Isaac Asimovの作品のようではないだろうか。この作品が書かれたのは、BradburyもAsimovも10歳だった。ではこの文章は、10歳の彼らのどちらかが書いたのか？

1930年に発表されたと言うから、Lovecraftが40歳前後に書き上げた作品であり、もう90年ほど以前に書き上げられた小説である。1930年と言えば、日本では夏目漱石が世を去って14年、その門下である芥川龍之介が亡くなってたった3年しか経っていない。谷崎潤一郎の「痴人の愛」が発表されてから幾年も経たず、永井荷風の「墨東奇譚」まで7年、この1937年にLovecraftは不遇のままこの世を去っている。経済史としては、米国の大恐慌の翌年であり、日本史では、満州事変の前年である。何とも暗い、けれども実りの多い時期であったとも言えそうだ。

彼の作品は、やや古めかしい。それはもう100年近くの年月が経っているのだから、仕方ないだろう。けれども彼は、その時代にあっては急進的なほどに新しい。そして最後まで読んだ読者に報いてくれるTwistを用意してくれている。

その手のファンにはお馴染みの名編集者S.T.ヨシ氏による序文と、参考文献表が載せられた傑作集。内容は目次を見て頂ければ判るだろうが、割と満遍なくラヴクラフトの作品群を収録している。これだけだったら「ラヴクラフトの原書を当たりたい者なら持っていてもいいかも知れない」程度のお薦めしかしなかっただろうが、この本の本当に凄いところは巻末にある。360頁の本編に対して、何と60頁近くにも亘って、ヨシ氏が各話毎によく纏められた解説と、短い参考文献表、それに詳しい註を加えてくれているのだ。量が多いので混乱し易く、欄外に対応頁数でもメモしておかないと使い難いのが玉に瑕だが、これは嬉しい悲鳴だろう。価格が安い割にかなり充実した内容である。

It's a beautiful edition. No skimping on craftsmanship either. I don't know why people are complaining about the pages- they're called deckle edges. It's a thing, please look it up. It's not evidence of shoddy construction. I personally adore a book with deckle edges- both the aesthetics and texture are very pleasant to me. I have no complaints.

H.P. Lovecraft lived in poverty most of his life, died a painful death at a young age, and only lived to see one of his novels published during his lifetime (The Shadow Over Innsmouth). His short stories were also only published in pulp fiction magazines (mainly Weird Tales) during his lifetime, and were largely unappreciated. In my opinion it is one of the great tragedies in the history of literature that Lovecraft was not celebrated during his lifetime for his incredible works.

Today, Lovecraft is considered one of the greatest horror authors who ever lived, and his fiction created an entire mythos that authors still expand on to this day. This collection contains, in my opinion, most of his best works. Some of these, like The Shadow Over Innsmouth, I consider to be perfect, and among the best novellas or short stories ever written. Occasionally the notes by S.T. Joshi are a bit excessive, to the point of annoyance, and can contain borderline obsessive levels of detail. They also occasionally contain spoilers, which I find very irritating. On the whole, however, this book is incredible and a must-read for any fan of horror or supernatural fiction. Highly, highly recommended.

As a side note, I have not read all of Lovecraft's stories yet, but I have read several dozen, including many of the most known ones, and these are the top five Lovecraft stories (of the ones I've read) in my opinion:

2. The Colour Out of Space (included in this book)
3. The Shadow Out of Time
4. The Dreams in the Witch House

Sehr empfehlenswerte Anthologie der Erzählungen H.P. Lovecrafts. Dieser Band enthält viele meiner Lieblingsgeschichten. Die Kommentare von ST Joshi tragen viel zum Lesegenuss bei. Ich empfehle die Penguin-Reihe, da sie preisgünstig ist und zuverlässige Textausgaben in einer angenehm zu lesenden Schrifttype bietet.
