チャーリー・バケット少年は、この夢のような招待券を偶然手に入れた。道で1ドル紙幣を拾った彼は、どうしてもがまんできずに、あこがれのワンカのチョコバーを2本買ってしまう。そのお金があれば、貧しい家族に食べ物を買えることはわかっていたのに…。しかし2本目の包みを開けたとき、下の方でかすかに光るものを見つけたのだ！

その翌日、チャーリーはいよいよ工場の門をくぐる。一緒に行くのは、テレビっ子のマイク・テービー、お金持ちのお嬢様ベルーカ・ソルト、ガムが大好きなバイオレット・ボールガード、それに食いしん坊のオーガスタス・グループ。4人ともどこか頼りない。はたしてチョコレート工場の秘密とは何か、なぞめいた経営者ワンカとは何者なのか、その答えが5人の目の前でしだいに明らかになる。秘密のチョコレート工場はうわさ以上の、驚くべき場所だった。そしてそこでチャーリーを待ちうけていたのは、もう二度ともとの生活には戻れない運命だった。

著者について

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Wales of Norwegian parents. He spent his childhood in England and, at age eighteen, went to work for the Shell Oil Company in Africa. When World War II broke out, he joined the Royal Air Force and became a fighter pilot. At the age of twenty-six he moved to Washington, D.C., and it was there he began to write. His first short story, which recounted his adventures in the war, was bought by The Saturday Evening Post, and so began a long and illustrious career.

After establishing himself as a writer for adults, Roald Dahl began writing children’s stories in 1960 while living in England with his family. His first stories were written as entertainment for his own children, to whom many of his books are dedicated.

Roald Dahl is now considered one of the most beloved storytellers of our time. Although he passed away in 1990, his popularity continues to increase as his fantastic novels, including James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, The BFG, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, delight an ever-growing legion of fans.

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Llandaff, South Wales, and went to Repton School in England. His parents were Norwegian, so holidays were spent in Norway. As he explains in Boy, he turned down the idea of university in favor of a job that would take him to"a wonderful faraway place. In 1933 he joined the Shell Company, which sent him to Mombasa in East Africa. When World War II began in 1939 he became a fighter pilot and in 1942 was made assistant air attaché in Washington, where he started to write short stories. His first major success as a writer for children was in 1964. Thereafter his children's books brought him increasing popularity, and when he died children mourned the world over, particularly in Britain where he had lived for many years.The BFG is dedicated to the memory of Roald Dahls eldest daughter, Olivia, who died from measles when she was seven – the same age at which his sister had died (fron appendicitis) over forty years before. Quentin Blake, the first Children’s Laureate of the United Kingdom, has illustrated most of Roald Dahl’s children’s books.

　実にユーモアたっぷりで、章が進めば進むほど話の内容にぐぐっと引き込まれますね。
その面白さについては他の方のコメントに書いてあるとおりです。

　私は今回この英文を精読してみました。１章ごとに、まず素読（速読）し大意を掴み、
次にじっくり読んで、意味の分からない単語や語句、節などに鉛筆でｱﾝﾀﾞｰﾗｲﾝを引きます。
紙面の空白部に訳を書き込むのですが、ページ毎にもう真っ黒になってしまいました。
それほどに私の語彙力の無さには我ながら辟易しました。

　ともあれ作者のロアルド・ダール氏に敬意を表し一言一句、前置詞１個にいたるまで
こだわってできるだけ正確に訳してみることにしました。
そうすると簡単な単語の組み合わせが、全然意味が理解できていないことに気づいたのです。
つまりそれらは組み合わさって熟語や慣用句になっていたんですね。
　例えば６章の最後の方、no good can ever come from spoiling a child like that という
文ですが意味がちんぷんかんぷん。電子辞書の英和大辞典でも英辞郎辞書にも該当がなく、
結局ググって重箱の隅をつつくようにして出てきた訳が「no good can ever come from
doing---：---していい訳がない」というものでした。アメリカ語的慣用句だそうです。
　これはほんの一例ですがあまり使わない単語や熟語、慣用句が結構あります。
食べる（飲むなど）関連でも、eat,nibble,lick,munch,taste,suck,try,gorge,lap,pop,
guzzle,drink,feed,feast,chewとあります。（全て文中に出てきた単語）

　文章自体は児童文学ですが、あくまでEnglish Native向けなので日本人にとって必ずしも
易しいとはいえません。文法的には高校英語程度だと思います。語彙的にはそれ以上。
もちろん簡単な文章もありますが（初っ端がそれ）。だいたい読めたというのは実は
ほとんど理解できていないと思います。
　文体の特徴としては分詞構文を多用していますが、意味の違いがいろいろありますので
今一度文法書を確認しておきました。これは長文を形成しますのでなかなか読むのに骨の
折れるものです。他の方のように中学英語でスイスイ読めて理解できる、とはいかないで
すね。もし数あるコメントを見て僕は（私は）無理だと落胆された方は気落ちする必要
はありません。ましてや辞書なしで全てが理解できるものではありません。
特にOompa Loompasが歌う歌の歌詞がすごく難しいです。ちょっとやそっとでは訳せません。

　英語的表現で面白いのは２３章のSquare Sweets That Look roundですね。
ここのところは日本語で翻訳したって面白くもなんともないです。訳としては１．丸く
見える四角いお菓子　２．（キョロキョロと）辺りを見回す四角いお菓子、
の２通りの訳なんですが、look round が持つ独特の意味が誤解を生み、何か漫才を聞いて
いるようコミカルな章になっています。読んでみないと雰囲気はわかりませんが。
なお、Sweetsはイギリス版で、アメリカ版はCandiesとなっています。どちらもざっくりと
「お菓子」と訳します。

　ちなみにPuffin Bookにはイギリス版とアメリカ版があります。私はその両方を持って
いますが、文章自体に違いはありません。相違点は慣用的に使う単語の違いです。例えば
歩道：sidewalk(米),pavement(英)、rubbishとgarbageの区別など。決定的に違うのは、
Charlieが拾うお金のことです。１０章にありますが、(米)It was a dollar bill!「１ドル
札だ！」、(英)It was a fifty-pence piece!「50ﾍﾟﾝｽ硬貨（銀貨）だ！」となっています。
なお、Quentin Blake の挿絵では、Charlieが丸いお金(硬貨)を持ってチョコを買っています。
ところでジョニー･デップ主演の映画では10ドル札でしたかね。

　Amazonの販売しているPuffin BookのＣＤ付き本ですが、驚いたことに本はイギリス版なの
ですが、ナレーターが話しているのはアメリカ版の方なのです。1ドル札です。
もっともナレーター自身はイギリス人で発音はイギリス英語です。私は本を両方を持っている
ので気づきましたが、ちょっとこれでは困りますね。うろたえること必至です。

　ということでせっかく買ったCharlie and the Chocolate Factory じっくりゆっくり
おいしく味わおうではありませんか！

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has become a nightly hit in our household, especially in the Kindle edition. I picked this up to read to my 8-year-old daughter, and it’s now a treasured part of our bedtime routine. Plus, it's an excuse for me to revisit my childhood without having to explain why I'm reading a children's book alone.

Right from the start, Roald Dahl’s world is captivating. The story of Charlie Bucket, his golden ticket adventure, and the wild wonders of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory is just as engaging now as it was when I was a kid. My daughter is absolutely hooked, and I’m pretty sure she’s considering a future career in chocolate tasting.

One of our favorite parts is the character voices. I try to channel my inner Gene Wilder while reading, which is equal parts entertaining and disastrous. My Willy Wonka impression sounds like a mix between a mad scientist and a game show host, but it keeps my daughter in stitches. Her giggles are the best part of the day.

The Kindle edition is a lifesaver because it means we can read anywhere—at home, or on the go. The adjustable font size is a plus for when my daughter wants a read. And the illustrations? Perfectly preserved, just like in the physical book.
