著者について

Graham Greene (1904-1991), whose long life nearly spanned the length of the twentieth century, was one of its greatest novelists. Educated at Berkhamsted School and Balliol College, Oxford, he started his career as a sub-editor of The Times of London. He began to attract notice as a novelist with his fourth book, Orient Express, in 1932. In 1935, he trekked across northern Liberia, his first experience in Africa, recounted in A Journey Without Maps (1936). He converted to Catholicism in 1926, an edifying decision, and reported on religious persecution in Mexico in 1938 in The Lawless Roads, which served as a background for his famous The Power and the Glory, one of several “Catholic” novels (Brighton Rock, The Heart of the Matter, The End of the Affair). During the war he worked for the British secret service in Sierra Leone; afterward, he began wide-ranging travels as a journalist, which were reflected in novels such as The Quiet American, Our Man in Havana, The Comedians, Travels with My Aunt, The Honorary Consul, The Human Factor, Monsignor Quixote, and The Captain and the Enemy. In addition to his many novels, Graham Greene wrote several collections of short stories, four travel books, six plays, two books of autobiography—A Sort of Life and Ways of Escape—two biographies, and four books for children. He also contributed hundreds of essays and film and book reviews to The Spectator and other journals, many of which appear in the late collection Reflections. Most of his novels have been filmed, including The Third Man, which the author first wrote as a film treatment. Graham Greene was named Companion of Honour and received the Order of Merit among numerous other awards.

Michael Gorra is a professor of English at Smith College. His books include The Bells in Their Silence: Travels Through Germany and After Empire: Scott, Naipaul, Rushdie.

　今までに何度読んだことでしょう。読む度に心に深く染み入るものがあります。グレアム・グリーン著の初期の４冊：「ブライトン・ロック」、「権力と栄光」、「事件の核心」と、この４冊は、グリーンが文豪であることは　もとより、すばらしい人間性と、人間を超える存在に関心ある方にとっての必読書のように思われます。

有能な作家が、不倫相手について心情をつづった形の小説です。グレアム・グリーンとしては、読みにくい部類に入る文体で書かれているのが特徴ですが、それだけ一人称の語り口が効果的に心情を表現できていると思います。読み飛ばしが出来ない本で、いやでもじっくり読むようになります。

この小説は「the end of the affair」というものにかかるエネルギーの大きさを描いている。サラとモーリスの不倫は、はじまったときすでに頂点に達し、「終わりへの意志」ともいうべき何かに支配されていたかのようだ。サラに奇跡をすっぽりと信じさせてしまったものは、モーリスを愛していても夫とは離婚しないという彼女の意志であり矛盾であったに違いない。モーリスを諦めたサラの心は死に、まもなく肉体的な死ももたらす。彼女の死から遡っていくモーリスがみた彼女の愛と信仰は・・・

グリーンの代表作ということですが、読後の感想は正直微妙です。

人妻と不倫していた作家が、彼女の心変わり後もあきらめきれず、探偵を雇って彼女の新たな恋人が誰なのかを探るという話ですが、読み進むにつれ、人間の愛情と神の愛という、宗教的な話になっていってしまいます。
言ってしまえば、作家は神に嫉妬していたという結末なのですが、「自分の愛はあなたの愛に勝つ」といった感じで、彼は最後まで神にケンカを売り続けます。
キリスト教徒でない私にとっては、この心理はいまひとつ腑に落ちない感じです。
決して話がつまらないのではないのですが、登場人物に感情移入できないというのは、読んでいて少々辛いものがありました。

英文自体はそう難度は高くないのですが、宗教関係の用語とか、ヒロインの夫の勤務先である役所のしくみとか、いまいちよく知らないので、こんな感じかな、と推測しながら読みました。

もう少し時間を置いて再読すれば、持ち味がじっくり味わえる小説なのではないかと思いました。

理不尽な、大人の愛

映画から興味を持ち、原作を読みました。

やはり映画では良く分からなかった部分に関する理解が深まりました。

読む前は、宗教的な背景等に関する知識がないと理解できないかもしれないと思っていたのですが、（実際その通りかもしれないのですが、）逆に宗教をよく知らないために、狂気的ともいえるほど信仰に傾倒していくサラに主人公ベンドリクスが感じる理不尽さやもどかしさが理解できたのではないかと思います。特にサラの葬儀が終わってからラストまでは、かなり号泣でした。

サラの夫ヘンリーの行動も、人間の弱さを露呈しているように感じる。サラの死後ベンドリクスに頼って生きる彼の姿は哀れです。しかし、彼の立場で他に誰を頼ればいいのか？独りで生きるよりは、ベンドリクスに依存する方が楽なのか？もし自分だったら、独りでも凛として生きる道を選びたい、今はそう思いますが・・

悲しく、難しい話ですが、独特の美しさがあることも事実。重く暗いロンドンの空気にピッタリです。5点献上。

英語はやさしいけど、深い・・・

英語としてはすごく読みやすいです。
章の区切りも非常に短いのでベッドタイムの本としては最適でした。
そのやさしい文章の中に神への、そして人間への「愛」という
テーマがとりあげられていて、こんなやさしい文章の中に
なんて大きいものを織り込むことが出来るのだろうと作者の力量に
感動しました。
映画版は見ていませんが、「官能的」と言った宣伝文句から想像の
つくものとは異なった印象を、読んだ人は受けるのではないかと思います。

薄いのに重い本

1999年に再度映画化された「ことのおわり」の原作である。人間と神への愛をテーマにした作品だ。英語はサムセットモームに通じるもので単語レベルでは確かに簡単に見えるかも知れないが、読了後にくたくたになるくらい意味は重い。200ページに足りない薄い本なのに、である。
アメリカ人の作家によるペーパーバックを読み慣れている人には、ちょっとした「しぐさ」や「出来事」を心理的に深く掘り下げるこの種類の本は、少しまどろこしい感じがするだろう。しかしそのような人でも映画と比べるとその違いを楽しめるかも知れない。原作と映画はかなり後半が異なっているからだ。
薄いのに重い本だ。

I guess it's easy when we are younger.
To a degree anyway; given how easy it is to fall in love, how easy it is to fall out of.
To miss opportunities or to regret things we said or things we failed to.

Whether an admission or a confession, it stands bold.

This book tends to highlight a lot of the "what to not do's" when it comes to love, lust and the like.
But the truth is if you stand back and look at the characters you see something grander. Something less malicious in the intents of all involved. It becomes less about "what not to do" and more about "what else can we do?".

The book ends up on a question, not on what is right nor what is wrong.
But on where does the line get drawn?

And it turns out for the characters involved, the line is blurry, fuzzy, insignificant.
Almost non-existent.

A man wanting.
A woman craving both lives.
Another man trying to do his best work regardless of the sacrifice.

It was the song from Ben Howard that brought me to this song. (The song; End of The Affair, aptly titled).

A song so strong and powerful could only come from something equally as so and this book did not disappoint. It was hard to read at times, not from a literary point of view but from an emotion aspect.
You can see train wrecks approaching, but you'll be left disappointed if you believe anyone can stop them.

This book does a good job of keeping you hoping, and that's the limit as to what I'll say with regards to plot line. What I will say is; at 32 years old (When I originally read the book) I did enjoy the topic, the substance and the feeling behind it.

It's also a story about how regardless if whether you can stop the train wreck.
Sometimes, good can come from the wreck itself.
Catastrophe can result in something new being born.

I'd also recommend Ben Howards song, beautifully written and the live version is incredible.
