帆船にもキャンプにも鳥にもイギリスにも、そして英語にも全く関心を示さないわが娘のために、せめて英語ぐらいは人並みに勉強してほしいとの親の願いを込め、プレゼントとして購入しました。挿絵についてはコメントを控えさせていただきます（ランサムの手書きのものではありません、ちょっと減点部分）。内容はとってもシンプルにまとめられています。オリジナルの雰囲気を感じたいというより、英語の教則本として使うのがいいのかも。
内容は、子供ながら海の危険を知っているジョンたちが、ある帆船である所に停泊中思いがけず外洋に流されてしまい、海には出るなという母親との約束を破ってしまったことに葛藤を覚えながらも、昔聞いたお父さんからの教えや、もてる限りの操船技術で危険を回避。また刻々と変わるまわりの状況、それに対してそのときベストだと思える対応を選択していく子供たちの勇気と決断と行動。すごいです。引き込まれます（海じゃないよ、ストーリーにですよ）
ちなみにわが娘は、スーザンの名前のところを音読させてみたら「スーサン？」と発音してました（釣りバカ日誌じゃねーよ！！）

ヨット遊びしてたらひょんなことから、あれよあれよと沖の方へと流されてしまった4人の子供達。慣れない操舵にてこずりながら霧や雨嵐に猛る海の脅威と奮闘し、とうとうなんとか最後には帰りを心配する母の待つ町へと道筋をつける、そんなお話。
最後半にちょっとした楽しいハプニングが用意されているが、概ね、単純素朴な筋書といっていいだろう。
その単純さにかけては芸が無いといえるほどではあるが、悪天候の海に弄ばれるヨットや不安におののく子供達の迫真的な描写が魅力で、けっこうぐいぐい読ませてくれる印象だ。

とはいえやっぱりこういうシンプルな筋書のお話は、人間模様のこと細やかな心理描写でもって魅せてこそだから、そのへんのディティールが大幅に削ぎ落とされてしまうリトールドでは、本来の魅力があんまり表現できていないかもしれない。

The Oxford Bookworms adaptation of Arthur Ransome's We didn't Mean to Go to Sea is very good for introducing young children to this wonderful book. The problem with the original book is that it is rather lengthy and contains numerous nautical terms (although that is part of its charm for readers interested and knowledgeable in sailing). The adaptation by Ralph Mowat is substantially shorter (14,860 words) and its vocabulary is reduced to 1400 headwords, a stage 4 book in the Oxford Bookworms Library system. Although purists will regret the elimination of most nautical terms (and I must say I feel that as a loss), this is understandable and necessary for the target audience--younger learners. The shorter length makes it possible to read the book in a fairly short amount of time (a few evenings), which is important in a world where young children are bombarded with so many entertainment opportunities, and can be so easily distracted. Keeping them interested is not always easy and introducing them to good books may at times need to be done via adaptations like those offered by the Oxford Bookworms Library. Ransome's We didn't Mean to Go to Sea is a book that I wanted to introduce my grandsons to (ages 8 and 9): It is a wonderful story about four children thrown into an exciting but dangerous adventure, alone at sea during a stormy night. It is a story full of suspense, but with no violence other than the violence of the elements the children have to contend with. However, I felt that it might be difficult to keep my grandsons interested because of the nautical terminology and the length of the original book. I was delighted when I found out about this adapted/abridged version, and I wasn't disappointed. The language is easy to understand, and Ralph Mowat has managed to retain the sense of adventure and danger, justifying the listing of this adaptation in its "Thriller & Adventure" category. In addition, the text is accompanied by simple but handsome illustrations that young children will enjoy. There is also a short glossary which defines the few nautical terms that have been retained. The exercises at the end of the book can be used to check on the young reader's comprehension, but I found it more interesting to talk with my grandsons about the story and its characters and to get them to imagine themselves onboard that boat during that stormy night. I hope that when they are older they will want to read the original book, but in the meantime, this well-written adaptation is for them a welcome introduction to the wonderful world of Arthur Ransome, and to what is probably his best story.
