Michael Schaller argues that the reconstruction of postwar Japan not only shaped the future of that country, but also the future of U.S. policy throughout postwar Asia, leading up to the controversial interventions in China, Korea, and Vietnam. In this detailed study, he shows how the U.S., after the war, sought to develop Japan as a stable bulwark against both Soviet expansion and Asian revolution. In particular, he depicts the intense conflict that raged among American officials, with the flamboyant Occupation Commander, General Douglas MacArthur, against virtually all civilian and military planners in Washington, including President Truman. Lauded by the public as a hero, and initially given free rein to shape the future of Japan, MacArthur was gradually undermined in a series of bureaucratic and personal manoeuvres. His plans were replaced by a new Occupation programme, which provided U.S. aid to rebuild Japan as a major industrial power at the hub of a subordinate Asian trading network. This was done in the hope that Japan's regional dominance would simultaneously ensure recovery, bolster world trade, and stabilize the fragile arc of Southeast Asian states in transit from colonialism to independence. Michael Schaller's fascinating account is indispensable to anyone seeking to understand the United States's complex postwar history.

題名は「The American Occupation of Japan」だが、中身は1945年～50年の東アジアをめぐる国際政治史の分析である。
アメリカの政策決定者（特に国務省及び国防省が）どのような観点で東アジア情勢を認識し、そのアジア戦略全体の中でいかに日本を位置づけていたかを、主に米国・英国の史料を用いて論じている。
著者の主張は、アジアでも深まる冷戦に対応するため米国は、日本を東南アジアと経済的に結びつけたが、これはいわば「大東亜共栄圏」（もちろん今回は軍事力は伴わない）をアジアの非共産圏に築く戦略であったという点にある。日本を親米的で経済的に自立した存在にする、という大目標を達成する上で、中国の「喪失」、米国政府内の組織対立などが政策決定に与えた影響が丹念に描かれている。

As one who lived in Occupied Japan for several months, I've always wanted to know what was happening overall to influence our day-to-day lives. This book, by a respected historian, provides the flow of geopolitical events that helped explain that time of our family's life. Prof. Schaller also provides the documentation that shreds whatever naive respect I once had for Douglas MacArthur. More detail is available in a separate biography by the same author who has also written an account of the relations between Japan and the US beginning with the Korean War and the Peacy Treaty of 1952 and for the years afterward.

extremely informative book, almost like a text book,
written by an intellectual who hasnt written it for ease of consumption... its a bit of a blur to read.
but if you want to know what was going on in the halls of power , it will tell you what was happening, and it was a very complex situation.. doesnt pull any punches with MacArthur..
goes over all teh infighting between various people in power
