In the past thirty years epidemiology has matured from a fledgling scientific field into a vibrant discipline that brings together the biological and social sciences, and in doing so draws upon disciplines ranging from statistics and survey sampling to the philosophy of science. These areas of knowledge have converged into a modern theory of epidemiology that has been slow to penetrate into textbooks, particularly at the introductory level. Epidemiology: An Introduction closes the gap. It begins with a brief, lucid discussion of casualy thinking and causal inference and then takes the reader through the elements of epidemiology, focusing on the measures of disease occurrence and causal effects. With these building blocks in place, the reader learns how to design, analyze and interpret epidemiologic research studies, and how to deal with the fundamental problems that epidemiologists face, including confounding, the role of chance, and the exploration of interactions. All these topics are layered on the foundation of basic principles presented in simple language, with numerous examples and questions for further thought.

Excellent introduction to epidemiology

This booklet makes for a really excellent introduction to epidemiology. I believe that it is almost impossible to write a better book on the same topic, with respect to this one.

Great little book

Rothman aims to give the reader a proper understanding of the basics, no shortcuts. He succeeds at this. I agree with other reviews that the book is simply written, but not simplistic. It is not a "Dummies guide to..." I think this book would have been slightly tricky to read if one does not have some basic background in stats, or a bit of epidemiology, or a little maths. I have a background in introductory statistics and epidemiology, and the value of the book for me was to cement into my gray matter some of the concepts to which I have been introduced previously.
I disagree with other reviews that Rothman is anti stats, he explains that epidemiology is more than stats, and warns that stats have to be applied correctly. He does not avoid stats; the book has a good deal of it, including chapters on regression models, random error and analysis of simple data sets. This is very good book, Rothman has deep insight into the subject matter; this is evident in this great little book. I have ordered his book "Modern Epidemiology" and I am looking forward to it.

problems with delivering
2013年7月14日に英国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
I ordered this book because of her specificity. At the first, I didnt get my book personally to my hands, a courier gave the book to somebody who never worked at our workplace, but on the Internet was status "delivered", but not to me. I was starting to complain, and very nice customer service helped me and sent another. But a mistake was made again. The courier didnt recognise the address of delivery, so I had to go cca 20km to their central place and picked up by myself. On the other hand, the book was all right, without visible damage.
