This volume of the Complete Works of Oscar Wilde is the first volume of Wilde's journalism. Throughout the 1880s Oscar Wilde devoted the greater part of his creative energies to working as a professional journalist and he was prepared to write on a remarkable range of topics - from cookery books to lyric poetry, from classical translations to three-volume novels, from dress reform to transatlantic visitors. He also reviewed theatrical productions and art exhibitions of many kinds. Between 1887 and 1889 he edited the pioneering Woman's World magazine to which he contributed lengthy columns discussing literary and other matters of interest to an educated female readership.
This is the first comprehensive edition of Wilde's journalism since 1908. It includes all of his known contributions, both signed and anonymous, to periodicals and newspapers. Of the more than 150 items - reviews, articles, editorials - a significant number have been identified for the first time, while the authenticity of others previously thought to be by Wilde is questioned. An extensive commentary offers the sources for Wilde's extraordinary cultural knowledge and provides cross-references to his oeuvre as whole. In the case of the book reviews, the commentary indicates relevant pages and passages in the works under discussion.
Uniquely witty, intellectually acute, and socially aware Wilde's journalism not only displays the extensive reading and stylistic experimentation that prepared the way for his major works of the 1890s, it provides an essential record of the vibrant and rapidly changing journalistic culture in which he played a major part.

レビュー
... the aim of the Oxford edition is to establish him [Wilde] as an author of major intellectual and scholarly significance ... in this sense, the publication of the journalism is one of the most notable achievements of the Oxford edition so far. This is because the articles collected here-most of which will not be familiar even to experienced Wilde readers-tell us a lot about the Wilde of the 1880s, a period of which we know relatively little... ― Stefano Evangelista, The Times Literary Supplement

Worth the wait, and worth the expense.

In my early teens, I discovered Wilde. I read what I could find of his journalism, and assumed that a complete edition would be easy to buy. Imagine my surprise, when this turned out not to be possible. And now, half a century and more later, it is. Perhaps there's no point in reviewing so ludicrously over-priced a pair of volumes: anyone who knows about the work will buy the books without waiting to read a review , or else will decide that they can't afford them. So let me try to be persuasive. The books, unlike (I assume) the others in the series, contain a great deal of Wilde's writing which has never been in a book before. Most of it is well worth reading; and the annotations are quite amazing in their detail. The editors appear to have read all the books which Wilde reviewed (something which most of us would not want to do) and their analysis of the extent of Wilde's paraphrasing is very interesting. Their knowledge of the background to Wilde's work as editor and critic is immense; and while I confess to having skimmed some of their notes, I look forward to returning to them later and making amends. The scholarship shown had to be paid for, and this, I presume, accounts in part for the cost of the books. I can't see how an edition without the annotations could work - though perhaps a cheap text (World's Classics ?) of some of the reviews might be possible. But the notes in the back are half the fun, really, in their recreation of a lost world. May I suggest that interested readers abandon any plans they may have for a holiday next year, and invest some of the money instead in these books ? It's hard to imagine anyone regretting their extravagance, once they've actually got their hands on them. I only wish they could have been published decades ago.
