Jonathan Steinberg is the Walter H. Annenberg Professor of Modern European History at the University of Pennsylvania, and Emeritus Fellow, Trinity Hall, Cambridge. His books include Yesterday's Deterrent: Tirpitz and the Birth of the German Battle Fleet and All or Nothing: The Axis and the Holocaust 1941 - 1943.

I bought and read this book at the death of Henry Kissinger .There were great similarities between Bismarck and Kissinger ( during the Brezhnev era and the detente). I was interested to see the forging of the German country by Bismarck and Kissinger formidable advise of presidents notably Nixon , Ford , Bush and Trump.
Although some corollary is notable particularly on avoiding wars that US might lose and on regarding the democratic institutions with contempt
The most shocking revelation ( which has ni corollary with Kissinger as He had to escape the Nazi Persecution himself) is that Bismarckian and all the ani semitism that he promoted led to Nazism. Furthermore Hitler was able to roll onto the dictatorial chancellorship created by Bismarck with all ruthlessness

The crux of my complaint is the author's abuse of Edmund Burke. He is a significant figure for what one might call modern, conservative, political thinking and philosophy. Why that equates with Hitler is not explained just asserted as truth. I took little further interest in the book.
