Sherman Alpert has been designing and programming advanced technology applications in Smalltalk since 1987 at IBM's T. J. Watson Research Center.

Kyle Brown is currently an Executive Java Consultant with IBM WebSphere Services.

Bobby Woolf is coauthor of The Design Patterns Smalltalk Companion (Addison-Wesley, 1998), and author of articles in IBM DeveloperWorks, Java Developer's Journal, and elsewhere. He has been a tutorial presenter at OOPSLA, JavaEdge, and Smalltalk Solutions, among other conferences.

As a keen enthusiast of Smalltalk but having never read the original GoF pattern book (don't know C++ and don't want to), I decided to invest in this alternative.

It contains quite a lot of discussion and it can be a little abstract to absorb if you think differently from the authors (we all think differently in one way or another and I rarely think the same way as other people so can sometimes struggle with their explanations - at times I found it difficult to follow the authors' lines of reasoning). Nevertheless, it is worth sticking with and experimenting with the examples can help in their understanding.

The sample snippets of code apply to several of the major Smalltalk dialects, with some differences explained where necessary. Sadly, much of the sample code is brief and incomplete, plus some code lacks full clarity (class or instance side, for example). For well-grounded Smalltalk developers this may not be a problem, but personally I found it rather disappointing as I was expecting complete code listings. After all, on the back of the book it says "The full source code that supports the 23 patterns is also available via the Addison-Wesley Web site" - this is no longer the case as far as I can see (and I've searched hard).

Overall though, I am quite pleased with the book and will persevere with learning many of the patterns covered. Readers may also find it worthwhile in getting a copy of the book "Smalltalk, Objects, and Design" by Chamond Liu (ISBN-10: 1583484906), which first stirred my interest in patterns - it doesn't cover all 23 patterns but I found the explanations easier to follow. Read both of these books and you should do well.

This isn't a Smalltalk translation of "Design Patterns." Instead, it's a companion to that book. You'll need to read the first one to get the most out of this one. If you have read the first one, you'll find this one is better written and really casts essential light on some of the GOF material. The Smalltalk aspects of this book are really a non-issue (except perhaps showing static-typers how many hoops you don't have to use in Smalltalk). This is required patterns reading.

Ich habe zuvor das "Design Patterns Java Workbook" gelesen und festgestellt, dass es zwar zum ersten lernen sehr gut war ich dieses Buch aber leider nicht als Nachschlagewerk verwenden kann.
Dieses Buch ist da anders:
-Meine bestehenden wissenslücken wurden geschlossen.
-Smalltalk ist einfach besser zu lesen als Java.
Ich kann dieses Buch zum lernen und zum verteifenden Studium sehr empfehlen.
