During the 1860s and '70s, more than a decade before the development of French Impressionism, Italy produced a group of avant-garde artists whose fervently nationalist paintings anticipated some of Impressionism's theoretical concerns. These artists were called "Macchiaioli" because they based their technique on a quickly rendered macchia, or sketch.
In the first extended sociopolitical interpretation in English of this important group, Albert Boime places the Macchiaioli in the cultural context of the Risorgimento&;the political movement that unified Italy, freed from foreign rule, under a secular, constitutional government. Anglo-American art criticism has generally neglected these painters (probably because of their overt political affiliation and nationalist expression), but Boime shows that these artists, while deeply political, nevertheless created aesthetically superior work.
Boime's study departs from previous research on the Macchiaioli by systematically investigating the group's writings, sources, and patronage in relation to the Risogimento. The book also examines both contemporary and later critical responses, revealing how French art criticism has obscured the achievements of Macchiaioli art. Richly illustrated, The Art of the Macchia and the Risorgimento will appeal to anyone interested in nineteenth-century European art or the history of Italy.

Albert Boime's "The Art of the Macchia and the Risorgimento" is a life changer, a work of genius. He clearly explains the term "macchia" and all its implications and then does the same for "aioli." For those artists like myself who are inspired by the I Macchiaioli movement, this book is invaluable. I find myself going back to the text again and again for references to Risorgimento artists and their ideas. By providing a social context for the story of the I Macchiaioli, Boime gives depth and even romance to this important art-historical period. For all those who have disparaged the movement in favor of Paris and the French impressionists, Boime provides a bold counter-argument. His coverage of the Jewish question and 19th century feminism is superb. The last chapter which covers the Cafe Michelangelo in Florence is a must read for those who would attempt an understanding of the great chain of art linking the ideas of the Risorgimento to the aesthetics of modern Italian socialism.

Formidable precursors of the French Impressionists

A beautifully written and researched history of a fascinating group of artists, little known outside Italy. It also gives a detailed social, political and cultural history that illuminates the careers of the selected artists and brings them to life. A wonderful book to read all through or to dip into.

A classic

A classic on the Social History of Art. Boime's interpretation looks the macchiaoli movement through it's own context, without measuring them by linear art history periodizations. Opens new paths for research of artists and expressions that were kept apart of traditional narratives in art history and art critique writing.

A disappointing book

This book has a lot of B/W reproductions but most of them are half-page size. Only four pages contain pictures in color. The works of the Macchiaioli are very fascinating to me but lack of color destroys the joys of appreciation. I am very disappointed. This is a book for art history.
