In Someone Like You are fifteen classic tales told by the grand master of the short story, Roald Dahl.
Here, in Roald Dahl's first collection of his world famous dark and sinister adult stories, a wife serves a dish that baffles the police; a harmless bet suddenly becomes anything but; a curious machine reveals a horrifying truth about plants; and a man lies awake waiting to be bitten by the venomous snake asleep on his stomach.
Through vendettas and desperate quests, bitter memories and sordid fantasies, Roald Dahl's stories portray the strange and unexpected, sending a shiver down the spine.
'One of the most widely read and influential writers of our generation' The Times
Roald Dahl, the brilliant and worldwide acclaimed author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, and many more classics for children, also wrote scores of short stories for adults. These delightfully disturbing tales have often been filmed and were most recently the inspiration for the West End play, Roald Dahl's Twisted Tales by Jeremy Dyson. Roald Dahl's stories continue to make readers shiver today.

著者について
Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Llandaff, South Wales, and went to Repton School in England. His parents were Norwegian, so holidays were spent in Norway. As he explains in Boy, he turned down the idea of university in favor of a job that would take him to"a wonderful faraway place. In 1933 he joined the Shell Company, which sent him to Mombasa in East Africa. When World War II began in 1939 he became a fighter pilot and in 1942 was made assistant air attaché in Washington, where he started to write short stories. His first major success as a writer for children was in 1964. Thereafter his children's books brought him increasing popularity, and when he died children mourned the world over, particularly in Britain where he had lived for many years. The BFG is dedicated to the memory of Roald Dahls eldest daughter, Olivia, who died from measles when she was seven – the same age at which his sister had died (fron appendicitis) over forty years before. Quentin Blake, the first Children’s Laureate of the United Kingdom, has illustrated most of Roald Dahl’s children’s books.

For example, the narrator of “Nunc Dimittis” happens to hear through some acquaintance that his girlfriend Janet spoke ill of him. What Janet said seems trifling, seen from the viewpoint of an outsider, but the narrator doesn’t think so.
“I can remember with what terrifying swiftness my hatred of Janet de Palagia now began to grow. It all happened in a few minutes---a sudden, violent welling up of a hatred that filled me till I thought I was going to burst. I tried to dismiss it, but it was on me like a fever, and in no time at all I was hunting around, as would some filthy gangster, for a method of revenge.”
And he finds a very singular method of revenge and succeeds in taking revenge on her. But the story does not end thus. A much more terrifying revenge she takes on him is waiting for him. In the end of “Edward the Conqueror”, too, there is a suggestion that the same thing could happen to the man.
In the case of “Mrs. Bixby and the Colonel’s Coat”, the woman’s revenge is not clearly described, but I don’t think it possible that the woman accepts the situation, as it is. What I felt about Dahl’s stories of a man getting revenge on a woman is that In the previous review I talked about Dahl’s stories which are concerned with the matter of a woman seeking revenge on a man. In this review, I would like to talk about Dahl’s stories in which the male sex gets revenge on the female sex. This time the person seeking revenge is a man and his victim is a woman. The stories I can think of now are “Edward the Conqueror”, “Mrs. Bixby and the Colonel’s Coat”, and “Nunc Dimittis”.

他の著者としては、Alex Shearer(13週と13日・・・)、Louis Sachar(穴)がお勧めです。
