Exposure: From President to Whistleblower at Olympus ペーパーバック – 2013/7/4

4.3 5つ星のうち4.3 396個の評価

The bestselling business book of 2012, now in paperback

Michael Woodford was a company man. He'd risen through the ranks of giant Japanese firm Olympus to become CEO. But just weeks into the job in Tokyo he came across allegations of enormous fraud.

Yet his every attempt at investigation was blocked. Losing his job, facing a cover up and possible threats to his life, Woodford fled the country.

Then he did something Olympus didn't expect.

He fought back. Risking everything, Woodford went on the offensive. He exposed the crimes at the company's heart, brought down those who tried to silence him - and became a hero.

'Brace yourself. Woodford tells his tale like a thriller'
The Times

'A brilliantly gripping book with a great hero at its heart. Has all the hallmarks of a John Grisham novel.... But
Exposure is all the more frightening for being true'
Evening Standard

Born in 1960,
Michael Woodford grew up in Liverpool, and after moving to the south of England spent the next 30 years of his professional life working at Olympus. In April 2011 he was appointed President of the Olympus Corporation - the first Western 'salary-man' to rise through the ranks to the top of a Japanese giant. That October he was also made CEO, but only two weeks later was dismissed after querying inexplicable payments approaching $2 billion.

Woodford was named Business Person of the Year 2011 by the
Sunday Times, the Independent and the Sun, and in 2012 he won the Financial Times ArcelorMittal Award for Boldness in Business. In 2013 he was the winner of the inaugural Contrarian Prize.

Woodford is married with two teenage children and lives in London. He now spends his life writing and lecturing on business culture, and the frailties of human nature in the workplace.

A must read for all foreigners wanting to do business in Japan. This is an easy to read (I read it in 4 hours)and very factual book about what happened in Olympus and also the attitude of the business practice of Japanese corporate establishment. A lot of fact about what happened, not too many simplistic judgement or Japan bashing.

A good example of how it is so difficult to "Make An Elephant Dance" in a country where there are so many protections. Former President Stern of Sony probably can relate. Hope his book comes out soon.

I'm pooped out of seeing Japanese way of doing businesses. If change happen in Japan, it's not from inside,it's from outside. They never changes....
This book is fascinating and easy to read, although many financial words came up, you could go through to the end of very last page. I bought 3 copies of this.

Woodford comes off as a bit full of himself multiple times in this book which turned me off to his plight and detracted from the story but overall this was a great read, a great look into certain areas of Japanese business, and was fun. At times it was paced like a spy or action novel and was hard to put down for the first 3/4 of the book.

As a businessman and Japan resident I really enjoyed this book and would while heartedly recommend it.

Whilst I hope that Japan Inc has learnt from this horror story, five years later I remain deeply sceptical.

Mr Woodford would know the Japanese culture, regulations and corporate culture better than most readers, yet, the story is only half told, unfortunately. This book is not in the same league as other corporate intrigue, financial machinations books, eg 'Barbarians at the gate' or 'Liar's poker'.

Great story - Michael Woodford did just the right thing - you will understand my ironic tone when I say that, strictly from their point of view, the Japanese did not exercise due diligence in choosing Michael. Clearly, they didn't understand what made him tick. Good for the rest of us to read about his integrity and just where corruption can lead to. The truth will out and it did in this case thanks to Michael.

Es un libro tremendo que recomiendo siempre que puedo. Es muy fácil de leer, se aprende un montón y entretiene. Relata la historia de Woodford que ascendió a CEO de Olympus y lo que se "encontró" al llegar ahí.

Easy read and a story told without prejudice. Michael Woodford also tries hard to leave you with hope even though much about his experience shows how foolish you are if you expect Japan to easily see economic turn around. It would make an interesting discussion to get those in business in Japan to suggest how Woodford might have done things better, ...but my guess is people would struggle to give an answer. He can never go back to Olympus, but personally I think the new government should invite him back to head up those in charge of running nuclear power generation in Japan.
