An urgent case for climate change action that forcefully sets out, in economic, ethical, and political terms, the dangers of delay and the benefits of action.

The risks of climate change are potentially immense. The benefits of taking action are also clear: we can see that economic development, reduced emissions, and creative adaptation go hand in hand. A committed and strong low-carbon transition could trigger a new wave of economic and technological transformation and investment, a new era of global and sustainable prosperity. Why, then, are we waiting? In this book, Nicholas Stern explains why, notwithstanding the great attractions of a new path, it has been so difficult to tackle climate change effectively. He makes a compelling case for climate action now and sets out the forms that action should take.

Stern argues that the risks and costs of climate change are worse than estimated in the landmark Stern Review in 2006—and far worse than implied by standard economic models. He reminds us that we have a choice. We can rely on past technologies, methods, and institutions—or we can embrace change, innovation, and international collaboration. The first might bring us some short-term growth but would lead eventually to chaos, conflict, and destruction. The second could bring about better lives for all and growth that is sustainable over the long term, and help win the battle against worldwide poverty. The science warns of the dangers of neglect; the economics and technology show what we can do and the great benefits that will follow; an examination of the ethics points strongly to a moral imperative for action. Why are we waiting?

レビュー

'Why Are We Waiting?' does not disappoint. It's an extraordinary book in so many ways – even though I have to own up to not being able to follow much of the more technical economic stuff, and was even a bit bowled over by his mind-bending excursion into the field of moral philosophy! But that's Nick Stern for you. He's always argued that most economists engaged in the climate debate just don't get far enough outside their own (often rather narrow) comfort zones; they're only too happy 'dodging the ethics', as he puts it.—Jonathon Porritt Blog

Nicholas Stern's masterpiece discusses climate change and its potential solutions from the perspective of an economist. What impressed me the most about it, however, was that Stern did not shy away from venturing into the field of moral philosophy. He discusses the moral and ethical dimension of the climate debate—and ethics is a subject that I have discussed in several speeches over the years.

Andreas Dombret, Bloomberg

Excellent book for a better understanding of the economics of climate change, whether it's the dangers of not acting, or the co-benefits of a rapid change and the exciting path to a new green economy

5つ星のうち5.0 Connect the Self to Climate

I think Per E. Stokness has made a contribution to the dealing with the human barriers to accepting, yet dealing with climate change. Bombarding people with facts does not do it alone, fear does not do it alone. Per might be way out there for some, but I have tried to apply his idea that we break down the self vs climate barrier, and see climate, self, connected by living air, as one. Then we can connect to Greenhouse gases hovering above us, and work to reduce them over time. I think this positive connection to climate linked with actions, like a worldwide tax on carbon while the Scientists keep doing their work too.

This should be compulsory reading for AGW denieres. They would not have the courage to read it voluntarily.  Why are We Waiting?: The Logic, Urgency, and Promise of Tackling Climate Change (Lionel Robbins Lectures)

There has never been such an existential threat facing humanity as climate change. Stern with passion lays it on the table brilliantly. A must read for all as we all need to act or there is no stage left for the world to play on.
