In David Sedaris's world, no one is safe and no cow is sacred. Sedaris's collection of essays and stories is a rollicking tour through the national Zeitgeist: a do-it-yourself suburban dad saves money by performing home surgery; a man who is loved too much flees the heavyweight champion of the world; a teenage suicide tries to incite a lynch mob at her funeral; a bitter Santa abuses the elves. With a perfect eye and a voice infused with as much empathy as wit, Sedaris writes stories and essays that target the soulful ridiculousness of our behavior. Barrel Fever is like a blind date with modern life, and anything can happen.

My favorite Sedaris collection
2014年9月28日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
"SantaLand Diaries" is the most famous essay to come out of this collection and the one most mentioned in these Amazon reviews, but only one of four essays and 12 stories that make up this gem of a book. My personal favorite is "Season's Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!!" and I bet I've given it to a friend during the holidays every year since I discovered it.
When I read this book for the first time I was on a flight to Paris (the last TWA flight I ever took so it was memorable for me) and it is the only time I can recall not being able to refrain from laughing out loud. For me it still the funniest story I've yet read and even after all this time still makes me laugh.
Don't be dissuaded from buying this book based on the reviews that claim this isn't as good as Sedaris' other works. I couldn't disagree more. I've enjoyed every single release from this talented author but Barrel Fever happens to be my personal favorite. And besides, the photo of the guys sticking out their tongues is worth the price alone. I have no ideas who those guys are, or how they came up with this as a concept for the cover, but it's one of my favorite book jackets and otherwise a perfect teaser to let the reader know what's in store.
And if my humble opinion isn't enough to convince you, take a look below at just a sampling of reviews this book received. Buy the book and get ready for a great read.
"A satirical brazenness that holds up next to Twain and Nathanael West." --The New Yorker
"Uniquely affecting, Sedaris's stories infest the mind as if they were your own dark memories." --Entertainment Weekly
"Sedaris ekes humor out of the blackest of scenarios, peppering his narrative with memorable turns of phrase and repeatedly surprising double-edged wit...suggesting a caustic mix of J. D. Salinger and John Waters." --Publishers Weekly
"Fortunately, not every page of Barrel Fever will leave you laughing so hard that it's impossible to breathe--thank goodness for the droll but manageable Table of Contents--but still, this is one of those `Open at your own risk' books... Barrel Fever is wacky writing par excellence: original, acid, and wild." --Michael Dorris, Los Angeles Times
"These hilarious, lively, and breathtakingly irreverent stories...move way too fast to be summarized or described. They made me laugh out loud more often than anything I've read in years." --Francine Prose, Washington Post Book World
"'SantaLand Diaries' is quite possibly the thirty-one funniest pages of text published in the past quarter-century.... David Sedaris slays me." --Bruce Barcott, Seattle Weekly

Ach, ich mag seinen Humor einfach sehr gern. Auch über dieses Buch hier freue ich mich. Die Papierqualität ist jetzt nicht so umwerfend, aber so ist das ja öfters bei englischen Ausgaben.

Not as funny as usual- more mean than funny. Was a bit disappointed as I usually have LOL moments with David Sedaris
