I read this book as an adolescent some 40 years ago, and have been enthralled with the concept ever since.

I had this in paperback decades ago. It blew me away then and after coming across it in Kindle recently it has been a complete joy to read it afresh and love it just as much. An amazing tale with a lead character who takes you with him along every road through time.

Great Zelazny style but thin plot, somewhat similar to "This Immortal"

This is not one of the Zelazny novels I read back in the day. Published in 1979, I find it to be similar in crucial aspects to his first novel "This Immortal" (...And Call Me Conrad...) published in 1965/1966, which I also just read for the first time.
The scenario involves a fantastical Road which travels through all of time, with exits to any and every time period. One of the select few who travels the Road is Red Dorakeen, and this is his story. The structure is deliberately confusing, with chapters titled "One" telling a linear narrative of RD, and alternating chapters titled "Two" about secondary characters. I've read reviews that make the novel sound totally fragmented, but this is not at all the case, it all comes together.
One of the similarities with "This Immortal" is the main character, one of Zelazny's typical mythical figures. Conrad Nomikos and Red Dorakeen, both mysterious, mythical heroes pursuing a quest. Another similarity, which is a weakness, is the plot. In "This Immortal" the bulk of the story involves fighting a series of monsters. In "Roadmarks" the bulk of the story involves a series of assassination attempts.
Clearly Zelazny could have expanded the Road Through Time scenario into a much longer, more developed novel. What we have is scarcely more than a novella. I found the ending to be weak. There is a T-Rex which adds nothing to the story.
But the enjoyment is in the style!
