Michael Cunningham was raised in Los Angeles and lives in New York City. He is the author of the novels The Hours, A Home at the End of the World, Flesh and Blood, and By Nightfall. His work has appeared in The New Yorker and Best American Short Stories, and he is the recipient of a Whiting Writer's Award. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the PEN/Faulkner Award for The Hours, which was a New York Times bestseller, and was chosen as a Best Book of 1998 by The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Publishers Weekly. He is a Professor at Brooklyn College for the M.F.A program.

　3編のそれぞれ、時代も味わいも違う作品（歴史もの、警察犯罪捜査物、SF）が入っていて、でも、それはウォルト・ホイットマンの詩と3人の主人公達（ルーク、キャサリン−キャットーカトリーン、サイモン）とそれから暗喩的な小道具（鉢や馬）そして、場所がニューヨークということでつながっています。

　読後感は一口ではいえません。とても美しいものを感じるのですが、同時にとても哀しく淋しい気持ちも残り、でも救いも感じるという複雑な味わいです。おそらく、これから、何度か読み直すべき作品だと思います。

　ホイットマンの詩を英語で理解できたら、この本の文章の美しさがさらに引き立つだろうと思うと、それだけの語学力のない自分が残念です。

米国人作家マイケル・カニンガムは、
ピュリツァー賞とペン/フォークナー賞を受賞した
『めぐりあう時間たち』で知られる。

これは、ヴァージニア・ウルフの『ダロウェイ夫人』をモチーフに、
世代の異なる３人の女性を描いた作品である。
ニコール・キッドマン、ジュリアン・ムーア、メリル・ストリープという
豪華キャストで映画化され、米国アカデミーの各賞にノミネートされた
(ニコール・キッドマンが主演女優賞を受賞)。

『星々の生まれるところ』でもまた、
産業革命・911後・近未来という３つの時間が交錯する。
各編には同じ名を持つ登場人物が配され、そこに古き佳きアメリカを象徴する
詩人ホイットマンの『草の葉』の一節が添えられる。

手塚治虫『火の鳥』を思い出させる。

911後に書き出し、３年かけて書き上げたというこの作品には、
あの惨劇の陰翳が色濃い。
アフガンやイラクで今なお終わらない悲劇まで視野に入れた作家の透徹した眼が、
物語に深い情感をあたえている。

こちらも、すでに映画化がすすめられている。
デビッド・ボウイとミュージカル、という話もあるらしい。

ピュアで神秘的なカバーと題名に惹かれ手に取った.
題名は邦題から,宇宙的な人々の日々と錯覚したが,実際は訳者による作者の憧れるホイットマン「草の葉」から取った意訳で,意味は違えど作品に合うロマン文学的ないい題だと感心した.物語の各主人公が,まるで宇宙に新たな星々の生まれるイメージに重なった.

「機械の中」は,近世ロマン派の香しさを帯び,この3連作で最も惹かれた.
19世紀半ばの産業成長時代のアメリカ,兄を工場の機械事故で失った家族 -障害負った父や立ち直れなくなった母と十代前半の幼い主人公に,兄の婚約者だったお腹に生命宿した想いやりある女性の儚くも悲しく美しい物語.
結果少年の起した悲劇や工場の災厄が,まるで中世の歴史書の絵物語を見ているようで，ロマン派の神の臨在を作者が祈っているように見えた.
「少年十字軍」は,現代アメリカ国民の不安と模索を集約し,ヒロイン女性の透徹した視野は,街の姿や風景を映画の一場面ように生き生きと描き,予想外の結末に考えさせられた.
「美しさのような」は,創られた直後不要とされた人造人間の異星人女性との苦難の生き様が人間的で,とても好感が持てた.

これらの物語の根底には,理由ある危険思想者や異星人,機械も人工頭脳もすべては宇宙の原子でできており,創られ方の差はあっても,本質的な違いは何もないという認識への強い訴求が感じられ,それらに対してどう対処してもいいという常識的合理主義への強烈なアンチテーゼを感じた.手塚治虫のライフワーク「火の鳥」や竹宮恵子の疎外迫害される主人公たちをも想起させられ,宇宙に存在する魂の価値はすべて同等で,決して多数派人間が正しいのでも支配者でもないという全一思想がホイットマンの詩と共に得られた.彼らピュアな魂の軌跡は,私たち人間にけして忘れてはならない命題を問いかけているようだ.

筆者のめぐりあう時間がとても好きです。３人の女性の行きかたにはいろいろな想いと共感を抱きました。

本作はホイットマンの「草の葉」という詩とサイモンという名前の登場人物、そしてニューヨークをモチーフとして、連なっている３作品からなっています。

いずれもいろいろな形で死とそして死者と対話を続けていきます。

愛している。愛しているから死を迎えさせる。

死ぬことは誰が考えたのとも違って、もっと幸運なことなのだ。

このホイットマンの詩が全編のテーマだと感じます。

機械を通して死者であるサイモンは、女性たちを死に誘います。

9.11以降次の世界のために子供たちは愛している人と一緒に死に向かいます。

遠い将来、人造人間は死に行く異星人のために、新たな世界に行かず彼女と一緒に残ります。そして次の自分の人生に。

１作目には困惑を

２作目には驚きと怖れを

３作目には救いを

「めぐりあう時間たち」は、ヴァージニア・ウルフの「ダロウェイ夫人」がベースになっていましたが、今回は、ウォルト・ホイットマンの詩集「草の葉」が元になっています。
「めぐりあう時間たち」と同様３つの話からなっていますが、今回はそれぞれ別の小説の形をとっています。
しかし、サイモンと女性と少年という登場人物の構成、古い鉢など共通のものを持っています。
もちろん、ホイットマンの詩が全編に織り込まれているのは、総て同じです。
ところが、小説のスタイルは全く違います。
「機械の中」は幻想小説的ですし、「少年十字軍」は推理小説的でもあります。そして最後の「美しさのように」はＳＦ小説です。
時代は、この順番に進んで行き、場所もニューヨークで前の物語の事件に言及されたりしています。
話の骨子で共通しているのは、ホイットマンの詩がそうなのかも知れませんが、自然への回帰であり、文明の発達からの脱却です。
人間の愚かな行いの先にあるものは何であるのか？
作者は、そこに悲観的なものだけでなく、希望も描いているように思います。

Michael Cunningham is genius and he proves it once again with Specimen Days. The stories are touching, and powerful, and yet so different from his previous books. This is my favorite from this author, after The Hours.

This book was recommended in another one in such a way that I thought 'I should read that' and that's why I bought it. The book consists of three parts, one in the past, one in the present time and one in a far away future. In all three parts the same people - a man, a woman and a disfigured boy - appear in various roles plus the same object, a bowl (I have not figured out what it stands for!) and the poet Walt Whitman plays an important part in all three.
I found it pretty difficult matter, but I finished it and I kept it (which means I may take it up again) and that says a lot. Interesting is the best word for me to describe this work.
I have - by the way - no idea why the horse features on the cover of the book!

In a most adroitly brilliant manner, Mr. Cunningham has depicted a truly vivid and wonderful story, 3 times in this book. His writing style is incomparable as always. And his juxtaposition of Whitman's lines connect the 3 versions of his story through the book.

Cunningham's main character is Simon. But Simon is different as a character in each of the renditions. The primary factor between the renditions is temporal. The three renditions take place at different times in history. The first takes place around 1856 to 1859 as best as it is revealed in the book. However, since Whitman first published "Leaves Of Grass" in 1855, it had to be after that.

The second rendition is circa 2005. But the names of the characters are the same, and certain things from the first rendition carry to the 2nd. But the main sustaining thread between the stories remains Whitman. In the first story, Whitman even appears briefly as a character. In the 2nd and 3rd, he is prominent as a philosophy.

Most of all, Cunningham seems to be trying to say that Whitman is not only timeless but universal. In his 3rd rendition, Simon is a "simulo" a titanium frame with a human body. His traveling companion is an "alien." This alien is from a different planet, about 10 to 17 lightyears away, but it is a metaphoric concept. Cunningham uses a real alien to represent an `Illegal Alien" and all other minority groups in this country. He uses it to show prejudice and xenophobia which both seem, to one extent or another, as Universal as Whitman. Yet Whitman would not have rejected this concept. Whitman rejected nothing, he only accepted and loved. Cunningham takes us just one step further to the understanding of Whitman's concept of universality and love of all. We can all be found in the Leaves Of Grass in the end.

The book is recommended for all readers of great literary fiction. Cunningham truly has a gift for writing. Do not miss this opportunity to experience it.

Maybe Cunningham was trying to break out of the serious literary mode as he wrote these three time-traveling stories. "Serious" authors are often dismissive of genre fiction but rather than commit to a single type, Cunningham writes a historical-ghost story (a la "The Alienist" or "The Turn of the Screw"), a contemporary crime-thriller novella (think "CSI: NYC"), and a wildly futuristic dystopian sci-fi treat ("Station Eleven" and "District 9" maybe?). Cunningham may also be trying to break out of the gay-author ghetto and so avoids any gay content in the novellas.

All three of the novellas are interesting in different ways. "In the Machine" is a sad story that takes place during the Industrial Revolution but hints at 9/11. It includes a number of powerful events and images, and ends very memorably. "The Children's Crusade" is a noir police procedural with a great relationship between the main character, her boss, and her boyfriend, but an ending with the young potential terrorist that I didn't buy. "Like Beauty" is the futuristic clunker among the three stories. In an interview, Cunningham said that he wrote a screenplay to turn the third sci-fi story into a movie with Julianne Moore as the lizard lead character, but the story itself lacks a core to somehow hold it together.

Cunningham includes fabulous echoes between the stories. Characters with similar names (Lucas and Luke; Catherine, Cat, and Catareen; Simon in all three stores; Walt Whitman and, yes, Walt Whitman) and similar appearance appear in the stories. There's also a glowing dish and the Bethesda fountain in all the stories to unite them but the collection looses steam at the end. I'll continue to adore Cunningham but appreciate the first story of the three the most.

First two thirds of this novel are winners and Cunningham at his reliable best. The last third however (the book is in 3 sections) disappoints as Cunningham tries his hand at science fiction and fails. But well worth the read for all Cunningham fans, as the first 2 sections are just wonderful.
