MARY POPE OSBORNE is the author of the New York Times number one bestselling Magic Tree House series. She and her husband, writer Will Osborne (author of Magic Tree House: The Musical), live in northwestern Connecticut with their three dogs. Ms. Osborne is also the coauthor of the companion Magic Tree House Fact Trackers series with Will, and with her sister, Natalie Pope Boyce.
 
SAL MURDOCCA has illustrated more than 200 children's trade and text books. He is also a librettist for children's opera, a video artist, an avid runner, hiker, and bicyclist, and a teacher of children's illustration at the Parsons School of Design. Sal lives and works in New York with his wife, Nancy.

アメリカの小学生に向けて書かれた児童書で、魔法の木の家から冒険に
出る人気シリーズの第25作目の本で、＃25〜＃28までの、魔法を探すた
めの４巻ごとの冒険シリーズの１冊目の本です。

Jackは８歳半の男の子。妹のAnnieは７歳半でまだ幼い面も残っていて、
好奇心旺盛な女の子。この日、マジックツリーハウスに行くと、Morgan
から「昼間を夜にする魔法」を探すことを伝えられ、『Merry Olde England』
という本を指さし、願いをかけ、冒険に出ました。

着いた先は、ワゴンやカートが行き交う1600年のロンドン。テムズ川か
らは異臭が放たれ、町には騒音が響き渡る状況です。

２人が町を歩いていると、熊を載せたカートを見かけます。Jackが本で
調べると、当時は熊と犬の闘いの見せ物があり、そこにこれから売りに
出される熊だということが分かりました。Annieは、何とかこの熊を助け
たいとの思いでしたが、熊の持ち主から追い払われてしまいます。

そして、多くの人が詰めかける先を見つけた２人が行ってみると、これ
から"A Midsummer Night's Dream"の劇が始まるところでした。と、その
時。Willという人が２人に話しかけてきました。何でも、急に２人役者が
足りなくなったため、出てほしいというのです…。

でも、Jackは極度の上がり症で、Annieは出たい気持ちはあるのですが、
当時女性は舞台に立てませんでした…。しかし、Annieの「Annieが出ら
れるならばJackも出る」という条件のもと、Willとともに、劇場の控室
に行くことに…。しかし、Jackは緊張しすぎて、もう真っ青です…。
２人はこの後どうなってしまうのでしょうか…？また、熊はどうなって
しまうのでしょうか…？

この本ほど、JackとAnnieの対比がはっきりと出る内容の本はないかと
思います。Annieの気持ちのすわり方には、尊敬してしまいますね。
当時のことばや、ロンドンの様子もよく調べられて書かれていて、
エリザベス女王も登場する本書は、歴史的な勉強にもなる本です。

「特別な魔法」を探す Jack と Annie の冒険第1弾。舞台は16世紀末のロンドンのグローブ座。当時のロンドンの様子、舞台での上演風景等、興味深い内容が盛りだくさん。物語のあちこちにシェークスピアの作品から引用された言葉も散りばめられていて、「さすがは Magic Tree House シリーズだ」と思わざるを得ない。

These books are a cry of relief from the five minute books we usually read with our son and they have already taught him so much about science, nature, and particularly history. Jack and Annie, the lead characters in the series, travel through time and meet with prominent historical figures such as Equipment Queens, take a trip to the moon, spend a day with Abraham Lincoln, land in camp with General George Washington as he is ready to cross the Delaware, and even convince a young Mozart to continue his pursuit in music.

They are well written books that peak interest in subjects young kids may not yet have access to and have accompanying research guides that give detailed back stories and historical guides to the subjects covered in the novels. Although the intended audience of the series seem to be for children around 8 - 10, our five year old becomes engulfed in the stories every single evening, always looking forward to what adventure Jack and Annie are heading for next.

Amazon also tend to have a wider availability of the series than book stores like Barnes and Nobel at prices up to half the cost of the same.

We started reading the magic tree house series after a trip to America where I think the books are more widely known. The stories follow Jack and Annie on their travels through time to various places in history in a magic tree house. The books are all 10 chapters in length and are all based around some form of historic event or time. For example, we've read about the pyramids, ancient Greece, Pompei and the wild west to name few.

As much as the books are fun fictional stories, the subject matter is factual and educational without children seeing it as such. Each story book does have an accompanying fact book although I can't comment on these as we haven't bought them.

They did run an English version of the books (which are American based) for the first few although eventually they went back to a common series. We're on book 22 now and I believe there's more than 40.

My 4 year old is too young to read them herself, although now she's learning to read at school she does read some of the words. They're probably better suited to 6+ as actual reading material. If like us though you're looking for a good bedtime series to get your teeth into then I can't recommend them enough.
