Hermann Simon is Chairman of Simon-Kucher & Partners, Strategy & Marketing Consultants, with 18 offices in Europe, Asia, and the United States. He is an expert in strategy, marketing and pricing, advising clients and speaking to business organizations worldwide. Prior to taking on consulting full-time, he was a professor of business administration and marketing at the Universities of Mainz and Bielefeld, and has served as a visiting professor at many universities, including Harvard Business School, London Business School, INSEAD, Keio University, Stanford, and MIT. Named one of Europe’s most influential management thinkers, he has served on the boards of numerous journals, including the International Journal of Research in Marketing, Management Science, and European Management Journal, and has published over 30 books, including the worldwide bestseller, Hidden Champions (1996), Power Pricing (1997), and Manage for Profit, Not for Market Share (2006).

Une description nourrie de cas d'entreprise, qui évite - en partie - le syndrome "mes clients sont géniaux", courant dans les livres de consultants.
This book has very limited value for investors. The company has large market share in 500 M market niche does not mean much in itself. Investors are looking for well run and profitable companies. Competitive advantage should translate into superior returns for extended period of time. The investors are always on the look out for such companies. Mere market share in some niche "as defined by you" does not amount to solid profitable Moat. To give an example...the book mentions Essel Propack, an Indian company very strong in plastic packaging like toothpaste etc. Just research this company and see what I mean. The numbers are just horrible for this company. High market share in itself will not translate into competitive advantage due to scale of economics if you are talking of $1B world market for your narrow niche "as defined by you".
This book is in a genre of Good to great, built to last etc. I am sure after few years the same writer will write another book on why some of the companies mentioned by him failed miserably....like, why hidden champions fail and make some more money.
Investors can safely ignore this book and save their money.
