James Marshall (1942–1992) created dozens of exuberant and captivating books for children, including The Stupids, Miss Nelson Is Missing!, and the ever-popular George and Martha books. Before creating his canon of classic, hilarious children’s books, James Marshall played the viola, studied French, and received a master’s degree from Trinity College. He also doodled. It was the doodles, and the unforgettable characters that emerged from them, that led him to his life’s work as one of the finest creators of children’s books of the twentieth century. In 2007, James Marshall was posthumously awarded the Children's Literature Legacy Award for his lasting contribution to literature for children.

I purchased several George and Martha books for my granddaughter, age 2 and a half. I read these stories to my children and my three other grandchildren who range in age from 14 to 21. When I asked the grandchildren what books they remember and would recommend for their young cousin George and Martha were amount the first books mentioned. Some of George and Martha's words have become part of our family sayings. "But George never said I told you so because that is not what friends are for."

My 2 and a half year old loves all the George and Martha books. Each book has 5 stories. They are compact and not overly wordy. G and M do activities that little kids will understand and relate to, like gardening or dancing or swimming, but they are also pretty amusing for adult readers (some are clever, eg, in one book, George sprays Martha with water, Martha is furious, at the end you don't actually see her spraying George back, but you know she does; others are very sweet, eg., Maratha's tulips wont grow in her garden, so George goes to the florist and buys flowers and puts the stems in her garden to cheer her up). They deal with different feelings (sadness, shame, happiness, frustration, etc, but not in a heavy handed way). Get them all!

One of my favorites growing up and now I'm passing them down to my children. George and Martha are best friends and are everything best friends should be, respectful, kind, loving, and "always tell each other the truth." Good lessons on being a good friend.
