著者について

James Marshall (1942–1992) created dozens of exuberant and captivating books for children, including The Stupids, Miss Nelson Is Missing!, and the ever-popular George and Martha books. Before creating his canon of classic, hilarious children’s books, James Marshall played the viola, studied French, and received a master’s degree from Trinity College. He also doodled. It was the doodles, and the unforgettable characters that emerged from them, that led him to his life’s work as one of the finest creators of children’s books of the twentieth century. In 2007, James Marshall was posthumously awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder medal for his lasting contribution to literature for children.

"The Clock"
Gerogeは、Marthaの誕生日プレゼントとしてカッコウ時計を
プレゼントしました。Georgeにお礼を言ったものの、カッコウ
の鳴き声がうるさいと本音では思うMarhaは…。

"The Trip"
GeorgeはMarhaを海でのクルーズに招待をします。といっても、
実際は川で、手作りの筏のボートで、土砂降りの中でのクルージ
ングです。GerogeはMarthaに"use your imagination"と言って
クルージングをしますが…。

"The Artist"
この日、油絵に挑戦しているGerogeに対し、Marthaは絵のダメ
だしを始めます。怒ってしまったGeorgeでしたが…。

I liked the humor in the stories and the treatment of difficulties in childhood relationships and cooperative endeavors.
These are great for a child when they begin sounding out words and learning to read.

My 2 and a half year old loves all the George and Martha books. Each book has 5 stories. They are compact and not overly wordy. G and M do activities that little kids will understand and relate to, like gardening or dancing or swimming, but they are also pretty amusing for adult readers (some are clever, eg, in one book, George sprays Martha with water, Martha is furious, at the end you don't actually see her spraying George back, but you know she does; others are very sweet, eg., Maratha's tulips wont grow in her garden, so George goes to the florist and buys flowers and puts the stems in her garden to cheer her up). They deal with different feelings (sadness, shame, happiness, frustration, etc, but not in a heavy handed way). Get them all!
