A lyrically told, beautifully illustrated book that brings comfort to children--and adults--who have lost someone they love
After Old Turtle swims his last swim and breathes his last breath, and the waves gently take him away, his friends lovingly remember how he impacted each and every one of them. As the sea animals think back on how much better Old Turtle made their lives and their world, they realize that he is not truly gone, because his memory and legacy will last forever.
Jago's gorgeous illustrations accompany Cece Meng's serene text in a book that will help chidren understand and cope with the death of a loved one.
Praise for Always Remember:
"Without mentioning a deity or religion, the text discusses how people remember those who have died and how their lives live on beyond them. Understated, unsentimental, and gently done."--Kirkus Reviews
"A sweet and poignant story with multiple layers for delving deeper."--School Library Journal
"This makes a comforting choice for families dealing with loss."--Booklist

Images are a bit dated and dark
2021年9月16日に英国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
I bought this book to help my 4 year old understand his daddy's death but I found the images in this book to be dark (not what I was looking for - you want your wee one to feel comfort and softness). Also, the tone of this book is more geared towards grandparents passing away.

UPDATE Perfect for processing grief when you are not religious
2017年7月3日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
As a non-religious family, we were looking for a book to help our son process the loss of our dog without concepts like heaven. This book beautifully describes how animals/people have a legacy of memories even after death. I bought the book the day our dog died and waited for my son to be ready to process it. I had it on hand when he was ready, and we read through each page and laughed and cried as we reflected on our own memories of our dog. It helped us just as much as it helped him.
Update 2024: I’ve recommended this book to several friends looking for ways to process grief with their kids without afterlife stories, and they all love it too. It’s been 7 years and a few more deaths in our lives since this review, and my son still grabs this book on occasion when he’s feeling sad about a loss and asks me to read it with him. Honestly one of the best children’s books to have on hand, in my opinion.

Beautiful and comforting celebration of life

This is one of the best picture books about death. The text and illustrations are equally beautiful. It's a celebration of life - after Turtle dies, his friends remember the wonderful experiences they had with him. They take comfort in those memories, and in knowing that as long as they are alive, Turtle will remain with them.
This is a great choice for opening conversations with younger children about the death of a loved one. It probably shouldn't be the only book you read because it doesn't address the strong feelings of grief, loss and anger that children will observe in adults around them even if they don't experience those feelings themselves. But this is a wonderful, gentle book that will comfort the adults as much as the children.

Great book!

I bought this for my 5 year old niece after my Father passed away. She lived with him and at that age, she knew he was sick but didn't really understand the whole death thing. My Mother read her this book and it helped her understand that he was no longer with us, but how important it was to remember him and all the wonderful things he had done for our family. The illustrations are also so beautiful. I would highly recommend this to explain the loss of a family member/friend or even a pet to a small child. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars!

Very sweet

I’d recommend Always Remember- this one talks about a turtle that dies and all the animals talk about how they will remember him. It is less about the logistics of death but more about how we remember those that have passed. This with The Endless Story are the best in my opinion to talk about death
