The Chalk Girl (A Mallory Novel) ペーパーバック – 2012/7/3
英語版
Carol O'Connell
(著)
The eight-year-old girl appeared in New York’s Central Park one day: red-haired, blue-eyed, dirty-faced, smiling widely. She looked perfect, like a porcelain fairy—except for the blood on her shoulders. It fell from the sky, she told the police. It happened while she was looking for her Uncle Red, who had turned into a tree. Right, they thought, poor child. And then they found the body in the tree.
For Mallory, newly returned to the Special Crimes Unit after three months’ lost time, spent she will not say where, there is something about the girl that she understands. Mallory is damaged, they say, dangerously unstable, but she can tell a kindred spirit when she sees one. And this one will ultimately lead her to a story of extraordinary crimes, to murders stretching back fifteen years, to blackmail and complicity and a particular cruelty that perhaps only someone with Mallory’s history could fully recognize. In the next few weeks, she will deal with them all…in her own way.

I love the books about 'Mallory'

I had read most of Caro O'Connell's 'Mallory' books before but lost track of them. I decided to get all of the ones I read plus a few new ones that I had not previously purchased. I love the books about 'Mallory'.

Finely plotted

The tricky thing with Carol O'Connell is the way the rehearsal of certain character traits and historical plot points becomes, over time, a little pat - even trite. In this book the hard-boiled writing style is getting a little perfunctory but the plot complexity is all there and there's even character development.

Dark, twisty and chilling - great reading

The body of a teacher is found in Central Park being eaten by rats and when the children are rounded up it appears that there is one too many. Where has the child come from ? What is her relationship to the bodies found hanging in the trees ? What has any of this to do with the diary entries of young Ernest which head each chapter ?
This is a twisted and dark detective novel featuring Kathy Mallory. If you haven't read any of the series so far then I wouldn't start here because Mallory is an acquired taste and the earlier books will ease you into the way she works and her traumatised background. I have a particular affection for these books as I find them well written and intelligent - they are very unlike anything else I have read in the genre. Mallory is manipulative and cunning and a borderline sociopath - characters in the book are divided in their opinion on the matter. She is absolutely confident in her own judgement and ruthless in how she behaves but yet she has friends who try to protect her, and the rest of the world, from the consequences of her actions. In this book it is a delight to see how she treats the lost child and you do feel that often she is more caring than those who behave in a softer way.
The story is about rich and privileged people who behave as they wish and the story reaches back to their childhood at a local private school. The author is no more sentimental about children than her character and the story is chilling. The writing is dark and twisted, full of unexpected turns and slightly grotesque characters. The story is gory in places, scary from time to time and completely absorbing.
If you haven't tried any of these novels I recommend them and if you already have then I think that you will find this a worthy addition to the series.

Well worth waiting for!

I love Kathy Mallory. The depth of her character is amazing, and each book leaves me wanting more. This one is especially good, perhaps because of the long wait between books. A bit about the characters.
Mallory is an incomplete story - nobody knows her well. Many fear her, others love her, and everyone keeps their distance. Well, except for her partner Riker. And Charles (who is hopelessly in love with her). And her late father's poker playing buddies, who want so much for her. Some call her psychopath. But one thing is clear. She has a definite sense of morals and knows no boundaries when it comes to protecting the innocent.
Coco, is a beautiful little red-head with a smile that lights up a room, suffers from Williams syndrome which prompts her to reach out to anyone for a hug putting her life at risk. She has brilliant qualities, such as recognizing any vacuum by sound alone and playing the piano; and can't lace up her shoes or button her clothes. She simply thinks differently.
Mallory gets through to Coco on a deep level, and Charles (friend, therapist, police adviser) wants to protect Coco from Mallory's investigative motives.
There is so much to this book, it's simply quite beautiful to read. Except maybe for the rats. Lots of rats.
The mystery is excellent as always, although the characters in this series are more important than the events. It's a psychological study of the highest level, and more fascinating because we aren't given all the answers. Sometimes there's aren't any. Well, the crime is solved, and repercussions handled well (and by Mallory). But we still know so little about Mallory - it's like peeling an onion one layer at a time. I'd love to see a Mallory book written from her point of view.
My only complain about this story is a disturbing paragraph about Charles Butler at the end of the book. "This summer afternoon would remain in his memory forever, a bookmark to a sad and curious passage that he must return to again and again. Weill into his nineties and long after the death of Kathy Mallory, on every fine, warm day, he would sit in a garden where he would only suffer daisies to be planted."

I had not read the Mallory stories in many years and came across this one, deciding to try it to see if author Carol O'Connell still had the ability to hold my rapt attention. Well, she does. The character Mallory still manages to intrigue, surprise, confound and consume readers. Another complex noir with lots of characters with hidden pasts and motivations. I'm once again hooked and look forward to many more hours with Mallory.
