It's about the IRA taking over ST Patrick's Cathedral on St Patrick's Day. In NYC. Very well written , couldn't stop reading it. I enjoyed it. I have read some of MR DeMille's books all have been very good. Liked the General's Daughter. And the movie Too. And Up Country was good Too. All excellent reads. I recommend them all.

Although this is not my favorite Nelson DeMille book (and I have now read all of them), it is so beautifully written that I have to give it five stars. Typical of DeMille, the characters are so completely and deeply developed that they almost walk off of the page. The story was so skillfully told that I could follow every detail and my heart broke for some of the characters on BOTH sides.

Some reviewers complained that there were too many characters. I disagree in that such an operation/exercise/incident would summon up every politician on both sides of the Atlantic who was able to hold a press conference and a smile. It would require the services of NYPD, National Guard and any other military organization able to stand upright and wield a weapon. Because of the significance of St. Patrick's Cathedral, it is not surprising that there were so many Catholic Clergy involved. No, there were not too many characters - even the innocent bystanders, lookey-loos on rooftops and hanging out of window were important to the story.

Other reviewers thought it was too long. Perhaps it was and the story dragged at some points, but this was a complex operation with layers upon layers of history between the participants. That history was so deftly woven into the story with just a touch of the Irish magic (Father Donnelly, Whitehorn Abbey and the ring) that it took a lot of pages to tell it.

My advice to readers is that Nelson DeMille is one of the most gifted writers I have ever read but don't start with this book. Begin with The Gold Coast and the Gatehouse and go forward from there.
