英語版
Jennifer Haymore
(著)
CAUGHT BETWEEN DUTY AND DESIRE . . .
Sophie, the Duchess of Calton, has finally moved on. After seven years mourning the loss of her husband, Garrett, at Waterloo, she has married his cousin and heir, Tristan. Sophie gives herself to him body and soul. . . until the day Garrett returns from the Continent, demanding his title, his lands-and his wife.
TORN BETWEEN TWO HUSBANDS . . .
Now Sophie must choose between her first love and her new love, knowing that no matter what, her choice will destroy one of the men she adores. Will it be Garrett, her childhood sweetheart, whose loss nearly destroyed her once already? Or will it be Tristan, beloved friend turned lover, who supported her through the last, dark years and introduced her to a passion she had never known? As her two husbands battle for her heart, Sophie finds herself immersed in a dangerous game-where the stakes are not only love . . . but life and death.

PRAISE FOR USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR JENNIFER HAYMORE:
"Jennifer Haymore is an up-and-coming new writer who displays a skilful touch in her erotic tale of a woman torn between two lovers."―Shirlee Busbee, New York Times bestselling author of SEDUCTION BECOMES HER
"A unique, heart-tugging story with sympathetic, larger-than-life characters, intriguing plot twists, and sensual love scenes make A HINT OF WICKED an impressive romance debut! I was rooting for both Tristan and Garret to win the lovely Sophie's hand for a second time. For jaded romance readers, Jennifer Haymore is an author to watch!"―New York Times best-selling author Nicole Jordan
"What an extraordinary book this is! Never expected it to be so special. The ending especially so as you learn another will follow this one. What a future this author has! Don't miss reading this one."―Romance Reviews Magazine
"A Hint of Wicked is amazing... one of the best historical romances I have read this year."―Fallen Angel Reviews
"Complex, stirring, and written with a skillful hand, A HINT OF WICKED is an evocative love story that will make a special place for itself in your heart."―Romance Reviews Today
"HINT OF WICKED is an exhilarating regency romance!"―Harriet Klausner
"A Hint of Wicked is powerfully passionate and perfectly poignant tale of love and redemption."―www.ReaderToReader.com
"Ms. Haymore's talent for storytelling shines throughout this book. She paints a picture of three friends who find themselves in a situation not of their own creation, but one that quickly becomes public knowledge and harms their friendship. The reader comes to know these characters-their faults and strengths. I would be surprised if anyone reading it didn't have a strong opinion about who Sophie should end up with and which marriage should be considered the "real" one. I had to keep reading to see what would happen. You will have to wait until the very end of the book to find out whom Sophie remains with and just how these three people work everything out. I loved that about this book. It kept me reading and makes me want to read the next book just to see what happens next. I will definitely be looking for the sequel."―Eye on Romance

As a child, Jennifer Haymore traveled the South Pacific with her family on their homebuilt sailboat. The months spent on the sometimes quiet, sometimes raging seas sparked her love of adventure and grand romance. Since then, she's earned degrees in computer science and education and held various jobs ranging from bookselling to teaching inner-city children to acting, but she's never stopped writing.
You can find Jennifer in Southern California trying to talk her husband into yet another trip to England, helping her three children with homework while brainstorming a new five-minute dinner menu, or crouched in a corner of the local bookstore writing her next novel.

Kudos to Ms. Haymore for her bold twist on a traditional Regency. Her characters are older than the usual, and their struggles are much more tortured than the Great Misunderstandings that pepper the genre. If she doesn't quite pull it off, it was still a brave experiment.
After Sophie's husband Garrett went MIA after the battle of Waterloo, she waited seven years and then married her close family friend Tristan who also happened to be her husband's cousin. Tristan's wife obligingly died in childbirth shortly after the report came that Sophie's husband, the Duke was missing. Though Sophie and Garrett's marriage had been a very happy one, Sophie's relationship with Tristan is a more mature partnership. When Garrett returns with the mysterious Fisk in tow, a case of amnesia and fits of jealous temper, complications ensue.
The strong points of this book include a very nice subplot involving Garrett's sister Becky arriving in London for her first Season, the Duke's apparent decline into insanity, and Fisk's real identity and motivation. Ms. Haymore did her homework in regards to 19th century British marital law and the medical condition known as amnesia, and it showed. The ending is not a wholly happy one, which may turn some readers off, but it was believable, given the main characters' predicaments.
It's forgiveable that the conversations and attitudes were more 21st than 19th century, and that Ms. Haymore glossed over the social implications of Sophie's position. This is such an innovative story and those things were necessary to the plot. The writing was a bit clunky especially in the first half of the book, but improved considerably once the action got underway. I did get a little tired of Sophie's angstiness, and there were several chapters where nothing much happened, but something about this book makes me want to read the next one. Three and a half stars rounded up to four. I liked it.

Three's A Crowd!

I started this book and I could not put it down. I don't think I had encountered this theme before: girl has to choose between 2 men that she really love.
The writing was not the best I have ever read, but the tension, anguish and suspense in who she would choose kept me reading. The premise is that Sophie, Tristan, and Garrett have been friends since childhood. Garrett sets his eyes on Sophie and they marry. They share a passionate first love. However, Garrett goes off to Waterloo and never comes back. Word is that he went down in battle and he hasn't been seen since. Sophie is devastated. She's comforted by Tristan and his family (He got married too).
Fast forward about 8 years later, Tristan and Sophie are married and in love. BTW,we find out that Tristan has loved her since they were kids but he stepped aside for his bud, Garrett. Well, 8 years later, Garrett shows up. He's a big, growling, blond brute with scars and tattered clothing. He comes back to find Tristan tupping Sophie. She's in a rather awkward place--tied to the bed and all that. That's when things get interesting.. Who will she choose? Her first love or her current love?
There's also some fluff with a cousin that leads to a sequel in this series. I didn't enjoy that side story as much. I would definitely read more from this author.

Interesting but....

I liked that the plot was a bit more unconventional than most of this genre and, although extremely unrealistic within the time period, the ending was unusual. However for the dilemma to work as it needs to, both male leads need to grab your interest and Tristan left me cold from literally the first page, which meant my sympathies were completely one sided. I'm sure this was not the author's intent but it meant I was virtually skimming pages later in the book.
A mixed read, containing both good and bad.

A good read, enjoyed the hint of the "forbidden"...

This was a good read - the plot was emotionally twisting, but not emotionally draining. The pacing was good, with just the right amount of tension between the characters (for the most part). The love scenes were erotic, with touches of the "forbidden" to kick it up a notch without overdoing it. The love stor(ies) were believable, and contrary to a few of the other reviewers, I think the ending was perfect - it shouldn't have ended any other way. (I don't want to give away the ending, so I better leave it at that.)
