The Pillars of the Earth, World Without End, Eye of the Needleに続いて読みました。本作も500ページ超の長編ですが、思ったほど時間がかからず読み終えました。The Pillars...やWorld Without...と同じく主役と敵役がはっきり分かれていて、敵役は読者が共感しにくい悪役として描かれています。もう少し善悪の境界線をぼかした方が魅力ある悪役になると思いますが、この方が読みやすいことは確かです。
英語はThe Pillars...やWorld Without...と同じく平易。俗語や難しい構文などはほとんどなく、英語の得意な受験生レベルでも十分楽しめると思います。Hornet Mothのメカ描写は難しいですが、物語の理解にはあまり関係ないので読み飛ばしも支障はありません。気になる方はWikipediaなどで実際の写真を見て確認すると良いでしょう。

　買ったばかりのバイクをドイツ軍の燃料統制のため、蒸気で走れるように改造するほど機械好きで優秀な高校生が、イギリスのスパイ活動に巻き込まれ、重要な任務を遂行するストーリー。
　読みやすいし、ほどほどに面白いのですが、少ない登場人物が因縁に導かれるように絡み合っていき、デンマーク治安警察の刑事に追いつめられ、少年の周りのイギリスへの協力者が次々と死んでいきます。
　途中まで読んだら最後の結末は想像がつきますし、ストーリーは少し物足りないように思いました。

第二次世界大戦中にドイツに対する空軍の攻撃がことごとく大失敗していたイギリス。ドイツが開発した最新機器がその原因だ。その秘密を知った18歳の少年が、証拠の写真をデンマークからイギリスへ運ぼうとする。そのミッションに失敗すれば、ドイツはヨーロッパを征服する可能性が高い。その少年が選んだ方法とは...。Follett得意の第二次世界大戦ものである。ドイツ人の登場人物を単なる悪者として描くのではなく人間味を持たせているところが面白い。そのためか、牧歌的な感じのする戦争物に仕上がっている。結末もほぼ想像つくものだが、それでもある程度のドキドキ感も味わうことも出来る作品である。Follettの他の作品のように英語は平易である。

If you are looking for historical fiction that also has pulse pounding, twists and turns that will keep you up at night, then this book is for you! Much like the best of Uris or Michener, Follett has crafted a terrific book that is hard to put down.

Como siempre, Ken Follet no defrauda. Es uno de mis autores favoritos.
La trama va poco a poco haciéndose cada vez en más interesante. La descripción de los personajes y su actitud va revelando también sus rasgos y personalidad. Todo ello bien unido para hacer de la lectura un disfrute.
