I came to this / these collections by way of a mention by Jack Kerouac - -yes that Jack Kerouac. The interview is from an appearance by JK on the old Steve Allen show. ( The vid is on YT. )
It is really a study of WW in a non-poetic format. It very aptly shows his background, personality and intellect.
The best part by far is the first hundred or so pages, showing WW's work during the Civil War, where he spent the entire war visiting troops in hospital camps. This part alone is worth the purchase, and should be required reading in schools.
It's no surprise Kerouac was familiar with the book.
Definitely a treat.

Published in 1882, Whitman's uniquely revealing impressions of the people, places, and events of his time, principally the Civil War era and its aftermath, offer a rare excursion into the mind and heart of one of America's greatest poets. His intimate observations and reflections have profoundly deepened understanding of 19th-century American life.

著者について
One of America's most influential and innovative poets, Walt Whitman (1819–92) worked as a teacher, journalist, and volunteer nurse during the Civil War. Proclaimed as the nation's first "poet of democracy," Whitman reached out to common readers and opposed censorship with his overt celebrations of sexuality

America's most lyrical wandering poet and visionary - a song of and to himself and a hymn to the ever changing landscape. A beautiul, and essential book.

A deeper insight into Walt Whitman

A wonderful collection of brief entries from Whitman covering everything from the Civil War to nature. The descriptions of the wounded that he attended as an orderly during the Civil War are touching. Prose becomes poetic in these passages.

Did not finish, but did not expect this to chronicle his experience as a visitor so to speak of civil war victims. It is well written and an interesting chronicle of the useless loss of lives, brothers against brothers, of the war. Too bad we have not learned our lesson!
