Dover reprinted Maxwell's Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism in 1954, surely one of the first classics of scientific literature over a thousand pages in length to be given new life and accessibility to students and researchers as a result of the paperback revolution of the 1950s. Matter and Motion followed in 1991 and Theory of Heat in 2001.

Some towering figures in science have to speak for themselves. Such is James Clerk Maxwell (1813–1879), the Scottish physicist and mathematician who formulated the basic equations of classical electromagnetic theory.

Prefaceに1877年とあるからMaxwellの死の2年前の著書ということになる。Newton力学の基礎概念についての考察を微分積分学を使わない初等的方法でおこなっている。(編者Larmorにより追加された最終章(Treatise on Electricity and Magnetismからのリプリント)とAppendixには微積分が出てくる。)
物理学の性質から始まり、空間、時間、質量など、Newton力学に現れる対象についての概念を順序よく明かにして積上げてゆくといった、慎重な議論の進め方をしてある。講義に仕方を工夫すれば高校生や大学1年生の力学の教科書にもなり得るだろう。しかし本書を読んでも力学の問題を解けるようにはならないだろう。むしろ基礎概念を吟味するために大学2、3年生がじっくり時間をかけて読むのが適当と思う。いま、もしくはむかしに読んだ力学の本に不満を感じた方にお勧めする。
Maxwellが量子論や相対論の誕生を見られなかったのは残念でならない。48歳とはあまりにはやすぎる死である。NewtonとEinsteinの間に存在した天才に対してむごいしうちだ。

優しい本だが、ところどころにハッとさせるようなことが書いている。それを見るのが楽しみ。例えば、時間についての説明は、ベルクソンの変な時間理解よりずっと好ましい。ベルクソンは過去・現在・未来が共在していると言っているようで、例えば１時間前に食べた朝食の時間が今も続いているのか分からずに、夕方になって朝食を食べようとするようなばかげたことに類似のことは、この本の「On The Idea of Time」を読めば言わなかったと思うがいかがであろうか。最も哲学者は飯のタネなら何とでもいうかもしれないが。

Do not buy the Kindle edition!

The Kindle edition is--except for the front matter and the first page of the text (scanned pages)--an uncorrected, unedited, OCR rendition with words so badly mangled that sometimes they cannot even be guessed from context. Sentences are interrupted with the text of footnotes appearing as part of the main text. Some diagrams are scanned images (okay) and others appear as gibberish. Use "Look inside" on the Kindle page to see what I mean. (I neglected to do that.)

The "cover" shows the initial page for scanned books in the Google Books collection, including the request for non-commercial use. If you want a digital version of this book, I suggest a PDF (free) from Google Books.

I returned it for a refund of my $0.99.

The five-star rating is for Maxwell's work, which does not deserve the shabby treatment of this Kindle edition.

Book I received was a bound copy made from an original in the NY Public Library (the library stamp is present in the front cover). Some pages were copied illegibly and so unreadable, others were copies of pages that had been damaged in the original and so were missing parts of the text (sometimes significant). Though the content itself is undoubtedly a classic, the version here provided by this seller was terribly disappointing and I would not purchase again.

Some Reverence Required

Just as some assembly is required as with a good chair for the study, some reverence is required to understand this book.

Mordern physics is founded less on math (as some institutional slimeballs would have us believe) and more on the accurate revelations and precision wording--plus just a dash of intellectual wiggle-room--of our most distinguished and revered. Careful thought about just what is being said here by Maxwell along with a thoughtful historical perspective provides an analysis of science that is on par with any analysis of calculus (e.g., as found in Walter Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis).

To give this book less than 5 stars is a sign of reprehensible bad taste.

This is a glorious book, I highly recommend it. Of course, you really shouldn't need me to recommend Maxwell to you. I can assuage any doubts you might have about the presentation being too antiquated to be useful to actual students, however. This isn't just for the historically interested expert, the insights are there for first time learners too.
