The influence of cognitive processing on second language acquisition (SLA), and on the development of second language (SL) instruction, has always been a subject of major interest to both SLA researchers and those involved in SL pedagogy. Recent theoretical research into SLA and SL pedagogy has shown renewed interest in the role of cognitive variables such as attention, short, working, and long term memory, and automaticity of language processing. This volume first examines the theoretical foundations of research into the cognitive processes underlying SLA, and then describes various implications for pedagogically oriented research and for SL classroom practice. The blend of research from the cognitive sciences and applied linguistics make it an excellent introduction to applied linguists and language teachers interested in the psycholinguistic processes underlying SLA.

a good collection of essays
2019年3月19日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
This is an interesting collection of 12 essays, 6 on theoretical issues and 6 relating cognitive issues to instruction, albeit tenuously.
As you'd expect, there is nothing specifically related to teaching. And given that there is little consensus on cognitive processes themselves, this not surprising.
As usual, a few things strike me about academics writing about instruction:
- the language and style is taken from research papers, it's not plain English. I'm not talking about necessary specialist jargon, I'm talking about unnecessarily verbose constructions which serve to pad out the content to build up the needed word count for MAs and PhDs. Having said that, several of the writers here do know how to write.
- the infighting between academics about their pet theories, refreshingly absent in some of the essays
- the way that things that are easily observable by teachers take on exaggerated proportions for academics desperately trying to make a name for themselves. "Focus on form" is a case in point. Any reflective teacher will have ample opportunity to observe this and tune their teaching approach accordingly in their first term in the classroom, but for some academics it's become a lifelong mission to establish and maintain credentials.
Overall my view is akin to Michael Halliday's = that what takes place under the skin (ie cognitive processes) may be relevant to cognitive scientists, but has limited relevance to linguists or langauge teachers. We know from observation what works and what doesn't, the internal mechanisms need not concern us.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed most of these essays.
