For all the elaborate analysis of speech and grammers, real insight into the origins of human speech has been elusive. This is what you will need to understand the issues. The author discusses the structures of both mainstream languages today and patois and creole, which all provide insights into what humans had to work out to achieve useful speech.
You are taken in a deliberate way through each type of issue and what must have developed for each part of speech. You will also hear the different opinions of experts today and in the past. Our author is not afraid to point out the weaknesses in almost all opinions which are inevitable in a field in which no solid evidence can be had.
It carries you along nicely and is never dull or boring.

Human language is a weird communication system: it has more in common with birdsong than with the calls of other primates. In this wide-ranging and accessible overview, first published in 2000, Jean Aitchison explores the origins of human language and how it has evolved. She likens the search to a vast pre-historic jigsaw puzzle, in which numerous fragments of evidence must be assembled. Such evidence is pieced together from a mixture of linguistic and non-linguistic sources like evolution theory, archaeology, psychology, and anthropology. She explains why language is so strange, outlines recent theories about its origin, and discusses possible paths of evolution. Finally, Jean Aitchison considers what holds all languages together and prevents them from becoming unlearnably different from one another. The Seeds of Speech is a fascinating book that will appeal to everyone who is interested in the origins and evolution of human language, including linguists, anthropologists, psychologists, archaeologists, and the general reader.

レビュー
'We must be grateful to Jean Aitchison for so very readably assembling a good deal of recent work that might seem to hint at how language began … liberally peppered with fetching quotations from all manner of sources, ranging from the cartoon character Charlie Brown through Lewis Carroll to Jonathan Swift's satirical novel Gulliver's Travels … the author goes out of her way to offer a restful read to all comers.' The Times
'… communicate[s] often quite complex ideas about language in a straightforward, intelligible, and often witty way … can be recommended to anyone with a curiosity about their language, where it came from, and how it reached its present state.' Child Language Teaching and Therapy
'She [Aitchison] carries her learning lightly and writes in a most comprehensible and often amusing way … I wished I had been able to ask the many questions that the book raised in my mind but that is an indication of Professor Aitchison's ability to make the reader think.' The Expository Times

Concise summary of language origins
2020年8月14日にドイツでレビュー済みAmazonで購入
This rather short book (222 pages of main text) introduces the reader to the current theories of language origin and evolution.
The book is organised in 4 big parts dealing respectively with the puzzles surrounding the topic like the questions about the beginning of language and its purpose, evolution of the human species and possible genesis of language, the evolution of the language itself and finally the diffusion of language and its future.
Each chapter of the book is concise and ends with a summary of the main topics which greatly helps with the understanding of the material and also with the reading of the book as a whole, as one can read the summaries of the preceding chapters before reading on, if one has paused the reading.
I enjoyed reading the book, albeit wishing sometimes to have more details on particular interesting topics. Once the questions of possible language purpose, human evolution and first language steps have been presented, the read could continue with "The Unfolding of Language" by Guy Deutscher - a marvellous book presenting all the other details of language evolution and change in a much greater detail.
Overall, this is a very good short introduction to the topic of language origin being a little bit too superficial in some parts for my taste.

Kompakte Einführung in die Evolution von Sprache
