'Incandescent, emotional, tragic and challenging' - Marcia Langton
In this groundbreaking book, Peter Sutton asks why, after three decades of liberal thinking, has the suffering and grief in so many Aboriginal communities become worse?
The picture Sutton presents is tragic. He marshals shocking evidence against the failures of the past, and argues provocatively that three decades of liberal consensus on Aboriginal issues has collapsed.
Sutton is a leading Australian anthropologist who has lived and worked closely with Aboriginal communities. He combines clear-eyed, original observation with deep emotional engagement. The Politics of Suffering cuts through the cant and offers fresh insight and hope for a new era in Indigenous politics.

レビュー
"I expect that this book will become the yardstick by which most recent critiques of indigenous affairs policy and what comes out on the subject over the next decade will be judged." --Christopher Pearson, contributor, Weekend Australian
"In the often-tortuous terrain of indigenous politics, Peter Sutton is a myth-buster. Through personal observation, forensic rigor and an anthropologist's eye, he questions the foundations on which 40 years of public policy, often imposed with bipartisan goodwill, has been constructed." --Russell Skelton, contributor, Age
"Incandescent, emotional, tragic and challenging." --Marcia Langton, Foundation Chair in Australian Indigenous Studies, University of Melbourne

Excellent history of complex issue
2023年12月12日にオーストラリアでレビュー済みAmazonで購入
I found this to be an excellent treatment of a sad complex history of human frailty, frustration, self interest, good intent poor execution, poor self expression on both sides. I am convinced the issues facing indigenous people can only be addressed adequately as one intergral nation, there is no good future in two parallel Australias.

An excellent, heart-felt, brave and much-needed book. Great service.

I would highly recommend this refreshing and very honest book, written by someone who has spent many decades personally observing and considering the problems described. It has caused some controversy for daring to go against the established view and pointing out that the return to the land has been far from the panacea it was once thought to be. The book came quickly and was in excellent condition.

Knowledge to End the Suffering
2021年8月12日にオーストラリアでレビュー済みAmazonで購入
Are you here because you've just read Farmers Or Hunter-Gatherers? Firstly, ignore the unappealing cover, you will find the contents of this book valuable. Highly regarded Peter Sutton, at the age of 75, is about to become known by a new group of people who have, perhaps, had no reason to directly interact with Aboriginal politics before. And, although The Politics of Suffering is 10 years old, it is as relevant today (2021) as when first written. From his intimate interaction with Aboriginal Australia over many decades, Sutton provides a disturbing and honest appraisal of the failures of Aboriginal policy. Disturbing because so many well-intentioned people have made a difficult situation so much worse. And disturbing because, despite the evidence, many current Aboriginal stakeholders refuse to adjust their approaches. Sutton's language is measured to avoid unnecessary offence, but the message is clear: Policies that divide by race will prolong the suffering. Reconciliation requires a path to an Australia where every Australian has equal opportunity and treatment, "...re-focusing hopes for reconciliation in Indigenous/settler relationships on the personal rather than the collective and bureaucratic". In closing Sutton says, "This book is about learning from the past, but it also addresses principles that I believe are bringing results already and should do so in the future."

As Peter Sutton says ... is not necessarily a good uniter of people
Very challenging and provocative ideas to be absorbed and digested by myself as a southern urban soft left Indigenous supporter.
