Detective Inspector Jack Frost, Denton Division, is not beloved by his superiors. In fact, he's something of a pain in the brass: unkempt and unruly, with a taste for crude humor and a tendency to cut corners. They'd like nothing better than to bounce him from the department. The only problem is, Frost's the one D.I. who, by hook or by crook, always seems to find a way to get the job done. It's a high price to pay for a pak of smokes when Frost interrupts his vacation to filch some of Commander Mullett's cigarettes and finds himself pressed into emergency duty. Denton Division is shorthanded after a car crash involving several tipsy high-ranking cops, and on Guy Fawkes night there's more mischief abroad than just a few children making the rounds begging for pennies and lighting firecrackers. In the next few days, Frost will deal with a parade of miscreants, including a blackmailer, a shifty businessman, a not-so-greiving widow, a sexual pervert or two, a crazed housewife, and a cold-blooded kidnapper. The clock is ticking, and Frost is perilously short of clues...

"What impresses me most is the extraordinarily vivid interplay between the police characters. Frost himself is splendidly drawn." -- The Times, London.
著者について
After a successful career writing for radio, R.D. WINGFIELD turned his attention to fiction and created the character of D.I. Jack Frost, who has featured in the titles A Touch of Frost, Frost at Christmas, Night Frost, Hard Frost, Winter Frost and A Killing Frost. The series has been adapted for television as the perennially popular A Touch of Frost starring David Jason. R.D. Wingfield died in 2007.

I am always staggered to our mind because of Frost's misfortune and indecent words.
However, at the end, I can retrieve myself completely to the sympathy of his humanized character.
Even if I know it as a rhetorical intention of the author, always I will give in the final resolution of Frost as ways of usual.

Every one has his own Mallet, but not every one can be a Frost; no greed, no malice. He investigates kidnaping and murder, as well as some robberies, and solves them without no glory he deserves. Could enjoy warmth in the freezing mid-winter.

Good read, compare it to comfort food, makes you feel good. Pity there are only four original Frost books written.

Don't judge the book by the TV series

I didn’t approach R.D. Wingfield’s DI Jack Frost series with any great enthusiasm. I’d seen enough of ITV’s Sunday night schedule-filler, with David Jason in the title role, to assume it would be lightweight, middlebrow, plodding fare, with signposted comic interludes.
I was utterly wrong. I gorged all six books in the series — Frost at Christmas, A Touch of Frost, Night Frost, Hard Frost, Winter Frost and A Killing Frost — within a couple of months.
There’s little point writing an individual review of each, as they all follow the same formula… There are usually three cases on the go in each book: a child/prostitute serial murderer, something rapey, and a robbery. Frost, of course, solves all three, each time accompanied by a different sidekick sergeant he’s been mis-matched with (female / posh / ambitious). On the way, he always succeeds in getting one over on his boss, Superintendent Mullett.
Described like that, it sounds typically banale and padded ITV fare. Yet R.D. Wingfield’s writing is anything but. The books are weighty, typically around 500 pages, but they crack along. Frost is multi-dimensional and scatalogically funny, the dialogue believably terse and crude, the narrative pacy, the plot-twists surprising. In short, they are (cue the reviewer’s standby cliche) page-turners, genuinely excellent detective novels.
There are flaws. In particular, the books’ casual sexism will jar with the modern reader. There are recurring motifs of Frost “jokingly” sexually assaulting Mullett’s secretary; there’s lots of sexual leering masquerading as banter; prostitutes are rhyming slanged as “toms”; child pornography is regarded as a minor offence; under-age girls are portrayed as knowing Lolitas; and a frumpy, middle-aged lady notorious for ‘crying rape’ is a stand-by comedy caricature.
Some readers may find it hard to get past these. For what it’s worth, I find them more fascinatingly revealing of the times (the series was published between 1984 and 2008) than I do irredeemably offensive.
My advice: get stuck in, judge for yourself.

R.D.Wingfield was not a very prolific writer. He wrote only six marvelous books in this extraordinary series. That is probably the reason for their quality. He wrote when he felt like it, not with the pressure from the publisher. "Hard Frost", is as good if not better then the first four. Drab, depressing Denton( fortunately it doesn't exist), horribly understaffed police station, plethora of complex crimes, hard working policemen and women( except the utter and complete idiot Det. Superintendant Mullett), and scruffy, foul-mouthed Inspector Frost. Clumsy, disorganized, but somehow immensly successful, detective. Just reading about his fatigue and long hours, makes me feel exausted. Only one left in a series. What a heartbreak!!!
