著者について

Kazuo Ishiguro was born in Nagasaki, Japan in 1954 and came to Britain at the age of five. He attended the University of Kent and studied English Literature and Philosophy, and later enrolled in an MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. He is the author of the novels A Pale View of Hills (winner of the Winifred Holtby Prize), An Artist of the Floating World (winner of the 1986 Whitbread Book of the Year Award, Premio Scanno, and shortlisted for the 1986 Booker Prize), The Remains of the Day (winner of the 1989 Booker Prize) and When We Were Orphans (shortlisted for the 2000 Booker Prize and Whitbread Novel of the Year). Kazuo Ishiguro's books have been translated into twenty-eight languages. The Remains of the Day became an international bestseller, with over a million copies sold in the English language alone, and was adapted into an award-winning film starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson.

The novel puzzled me at the beginning on what it was talking about. Is it about the campus life of a boarding school in England? Why does it make no mention of their families, home leaves, and anything about the life outside the school? After having read it patiently for almost one third, I learned finally that its theme was the human clones programed for a single purpose; donation of their vital organs. It does not discuss anything about technical questions of producing human clones, ethics of human cloning, who are responsible for their production and donation and all other details. This work of Kazuo Ishiguro’s raises a question if those clones have human dignity with soul. Once human clones are produced for whatever purpose it may be, there will be no way to go back in the process of scientific development. Then, where are the differences or the lines of demarcation among us humankind, our clones, robots and cyborgs. Creation of life has been in God’s hand since the time of Genesis. Owing to some obsessed scientists and human selfishness, we might plunge into a world that we have never experienced before.

寄宿舎（のような施設）で青年期まで過ごした主人公（Kathy H.）が、10年以上務めてきた"carer"という仕事を終えるにあたり、親友であるRuth、そしてTommyとの思い出を振り返る形で話が進みます。「carer」「donation」「guardian」「madam」「gallery」といった言葉が、いったい何を意味するのかよく分からないまま話が進行していくのですが、次第にその意味が分かってきます。

フィクションなのですが、将来的には十分起こりそうな話であり、また、現実の搾取されている人たちの状況を仄めかしているようにも思えて、読んだ後はいろいろと考えてしまいました。

また、Kathyたちの寄宿舎時代の出来事を読んでいる時は、何故か、我が家の子供たちが読んでいる漫画「約束のネバーランド」が頭に浮かんでおりました。約ネバのように、寄宿舎（のような施設）の子供たちが救われることはないんですけどね…

表現的に難しい箇所が所々ありましたが、思っていたよりも読み易かったです。早朝の通勤電車で少しずつ読み進めていったのですが、最後の数章だけは、これまでの話がつながってくるので一気に読んでしまいました。

改めて言うまでもないとは思いますが、お勧めの物語です。

Excellent novel has a multi layer of meaning that can read or can't read depends on the reader’s capacity. In “Never let me go” by Kazuo Ishiguro, there are, no doubt, at least, three stages of implication in my opinion.
First, on the surface layer, is, of course, live-donor transplants. It raises horrible and odious feeling sometime ethical reprobation to readers(see my review for the Japanese version『私を離さないで』on this website).
On the second layer, the readers are invited by Kathy H. to the inner aspects of donors; cloned humans. Kathy H.,first person narrator in this novel, describes the dairy life of clones with restrained manner. At this point the story changes to a kind of bildungsroman, but it is a very grotesque coming-of-age story. The youths have no future and they cannot but obeying extreme hardship waiting for them. The role that assigns the readers who sympathize the crone is not but to weep for them.
The bottom layer, in contract, has hate and fear for donors. Human creates crone for their willing of immortality but humans are uneasy if crones are superior to human and invade the human society. Madame and principal Miss Emily are instinctively recognize it because, in dairy contact with Hailsham students, they know clone has a soul and will. Its feeling corresponds to so called Whitephobia; caucasians fear, that is, in my understanding, Europeans once colonized and ruled Asians and Africans and now they have been revenged by them. It can also say Chinese and Koreans agaist Japanese.
Kazio Ishigoro is a super talent of literature, who knows highly controversial issue for characters he made. So he throws such problems to his readers not adding his own opinion.

翻訳でまず読んだ。人間について、また社会についていろいろ考えさせられたので、原書でも読んでみる気になったが、語学力の不足のためか、思考が深まったというわけにはいかない。村上春樹がノーベル賞候補になって久しいが、Kazuo　Isiguro　の作品に比べると、内容の真実味、真剣に考えさせる深さ、において、前者は軽薄すぎる。

Referente al contenido del libro aún no lo termino de leer, pero por el autor Kazuo Ishiguro se sabe que es una novela que valdrá la pena, además que es un libro con múltiples reconocimientos.
