Set in an alternate universe, Victorian England is a land where the Information Age has dawned a century early. Sybil Gerrard faces an uncertain future - a choice between the suave Mr Radley or the enigmatic General Houston. Gibson is the author of "Count Zero" and Sterling wrote "Schismatrix".

A hard-to read must-read

Being a fan of Gibson’s “Neuromancer”, it was exciting to start reading this proto-SteamPunk classic. But I found it tough goings as soon as the narrative shifted to the chunky middle of the book featuring the character Edward Mallory.
The book can be considered a fourt-part one: first part featuring Sybil Gerard, second (long) part featuring Mallory, third part featuring Lawrence Oliphant, and the fourth part, which is a collection of snippets, the last of which should bring a chill to your spine. And that’s why I would recommend that everyone ploughs their way through till the end, which is admittedly grueling and deeply dissatisfying.
It was tough to get through despite me trying several ways to approach it, and the only two times I really felt like I was reading something gripping was the first, third (featuring a Samurai character called Mori), and the fourth parts of the novel.
The two authors seem to have done a lot of homework and work on this book — it is an alternative history novel featuring several famous characters, the most famous of them (from my POV) is Ada Lovelace, who hardly gets text-time and has deep character portrayal issues (misogynism is rampant in this book, and is a definite put off for many).
So I’ll conclude by saying this: read this if you can knowing what you are about to get into, but read it you must if you want to be a cyber/steampunk lover.
