Anne, who lives in a suburban neighborhood in New York City, and her husband Marco are out to dinner with Cynthia and Graham, who live next door. However, Anne has a concern. She has left her newborn daughter, Cora, at home. The babysitter could not come because of an emergency, and she was reluctant to go out, but Marco persuaded her, saying it would be rude to the neighbors.
　Her bad premonition comes true. When she returns home after midnight, Cora is not in her cradle. At this moment, the days of nightmare begin for Anne and Marco. ......

　Anne's parents have a fortune, and it is assumed that the kidnapper knows about it, but there is no ransom demand from anyone for any length of time. Various speculations swirl among the family and the police. The police begin to suspect that Anne had caused Cora's death by accident, and that she and Marco had orchestrated the kidnapping to cover it up.
　Anne and Marco are at the mercy of the police and the media, exhausted by the horror of having their daughter stolen.

　Halfway through the 350 pages, you will know who the kidnapper is. But from that point on, the story unfolds rapidly in a way that the reader, and even the kidnapper himself, does not expect. This clever twist is what makes this book so much more than just another mystery novel.

　One thing that left me dissatisfied was that the reveal of the truth of the kidnapping at the end of the story was rather simple. I felt that it needed a twist, but perhaps the author, Shari Lapena, wanted to give the reader a real shocking ending with a further development after the kidnapping drama is solved, giving the reader no time to breathe.

　Anyway, I was surprised to learn that this is the debut mystery novel for Canadian author Shari Lapena. I read Lapena's fourth mystery novel, "Someone We Know (ISBN-13 : 978-0525505365), first, and I really liked it. So I went back to the first novel and read it.
　It is a pity that this author has not been introduced in Japan.

　The author’s English is very plain, and it is a book suitable even for paperback beginners.

AnneとMarcoは幸せなカップル。可愛い子供もできたばかり。
ところがある日その赤ちゃんが誘拐され....。

ありがちな誘拐ものかと思いきや、次から次へと色々なことが明らかになり、思いもかけない展開になります。

個人的にはどの登場人物にも共感できないし、最後も「はい？」となりましたが（笑）、アメリカでベストセラーなのも納得。

ちなみにタイトルの「隣のご夫婦」、でも見事なくらいダンナの影が薄いです（笑）。

文章が子供っぽいとか稚拙とか散々な言われようですが、英語学習者にとっては、この簡明な文体が読み易くて良いのです。所謂ネイティブが好む文体は、ノンネイティブにはわかりにくいので。
勿論、読み易さと面白さはまた別なわけですが。

I picked this up because it was promoted at the bookstore that you'll love this book you loved Gone Girl.
It was nothing close to the likes of Gone Girl. The writing is so amateurish, and the characters have no depth at all (the mother suffering from post-partum depression who's in tears or goes pale literally on every page, the detective who is "wondering what is really going on", the rich controlling parents...I mean come on.) It's one thing to write unlikable characters, but it's quite another to bore the readers with such one-dimensional ones. 　I admit it starts out well paced and intriguing at first, but less than half-way through it starts getting dull and importunate. I ended up skimming through the pages just for the sake of finishing it, but in the end, all the twists seemed forced and you're left feeling annoyed that the author wasted your time and money. There are far more entertaining books out there.

Bought this book for my girlfriend for Christmas. She absolutely loved it, it was based on murder/psychological thriller. Fast easy read, exciting reading, kept her in suspense to the very end she enjoyed it very much.

The couple next door is a story that will keep you riveted to itself. You won't feel like stopping. It is an unceasing thrill that you will look forward to. The story is well spun and the events are properly segued. The characters are animated and well placed throughout the story. The shocks come to you as they please. The story is unpredictable. There are no plot-holes. Just, go for it!
