From later antiquity down to the close of the eighteenth century, most philosophers and men of science and, indeed, most educated men, accepted without question a traditional view of the plan and structure of the world. In this volume, which embodies the William James lectures for 1933, Arthur O. 　アメリカ研究大学の嚆矢ジョンズ　ホプキンスで最初の哲学教授に就任したラブジョイの観念史を具体的に描き出した名著『存在の大いなる連鎖』。彼以前にはウイリアム　ジェイムズやジョン　デューイも候補になっているが　初代学長ギルマンの目には適わなかった。ギルマンの研究大学における哲学の位置づけの厳しさを証明したような人選である。
　ヨーロッパの知的伝統を受け継ぎながらも、アメリカ独自の学問を創成する研究大学を理念として展開された教員人選の実践は哲学教員のそれにも適用され、２代目の学長がやっと実現する。そのようにして選ばれた哲学の業績を象徴する本書は、浩瀚であり、読者を圧倒する威圧感がある。
　索引と訳注も詳細であり、欧米の思想における観念が２千年に渡って継承し続ける諸観念の推移を哲学史や科学史から漏れる部分に焦点を当てて、文学作品などで人口に膾炙し、実績に引き継がれ、学問的にも維持される現実との交差点で観念を分析する壮大な実績である。
　この偉大な知的作業は学術雑誌Journal of history of ideasで現在も継承され、一部は専門百科事典として6巻の大著として維持され、すでに邦訳があるが、その第２版も現在翻訳中である。
