Rooster's Off to See the World (The World of Eric Carle)
Eric Carle
One fine morning, a rooster decided he wanted to travel.
In this mini-book edition, using strikingly designed, colorful collage illustrations and a beguiling simple text, Eric Carle takes his young readers on a trip with the rooster and his companions. As he travels, the rooster is joined by two cats, three frogs, four turtles, and five fish, offering the child a graphic introduction to the meaning of numbers, number sets, and addition within the context of an entertaining story. When night falls, the rooster’s friends find he has made no provisions for their food or shelter and, disappointed, they abandon the expedition—once again in sets of five, four, three, and two, but this time in a declining series. Finally the rooster, too, decides that he has seen enough of the world and that he is, in fact, a little bit homesick. Eric Carle believes in letting children make learning discoveries at their own pace. This book can be read and enjoyed for its story and its beautiful illustrations alone; however, the child who is ready to begin to think mathematically will find additional pleasures in the opportunities presented in the text, the pictures and the diagrams for learning basic arithmetic concepts.

cartonato in inglese

What a wonderful resource

I am an early childhood teacher and this is book is a resource that I have used with great joy and success.
So many math ideas flow from this book:the idea of sequence, 'the one more to get the next unit' ascending and descending order and the idea that children relate to so well is 'join the band wagon for fun'!!!!
While so beautifully bringing in the enervating feeling of sunrise and the need for a restorative rest at sun down!!!
The concept of planning, thinking of all needs and for everyone and each one having the liberty to take their decisions based on their needs!!!
At a much higher order of thinking, I have had kids draw the big and small animals on the page and in the square as well.
This is a great way to get them to contain working within spaces. They also get a feel of drawing small and enlarging the same to fulfill their perception of understanding ' infinitesimal to infinite', something happening so naturally within them from conception to full growth in real life.
All this challenges so many intelligence's that Howard Gardner talks about. The illustrations are so easy to get even a 4 year old to attempt, I think it is worth it's weight in gold.

LOVE this Book!

My Son is 3 Years Old and ADORES Eric Carle Books. I also really enjoy reading Eric Carle Books to him. Aside from this one, I think the Grouchy Ladybug is one of the best! With Rooster's off to see the World, it is not only exploring counting and adding, but it is showing that semi-ambitious Rooster starts off with a great plan, but doesn't know how to follow through and support his plan. I've always enjoyed the fact that Eric Carle's characters sometimes come out on top, and some do not, but a lesson is always learned. My son, at his very young age sees this and sometimes repeats it. I am in my 40's and did not know about these books until my son first received the Very Hungry Caterpillar as a present. Eric Carle has been writing excellent Children's Books since the late 1960's! Who knew??? His new one is coming out soon: Happy Birthday from The Very Hungry Caterpillar
